I have a vintage electric one from the 70s. It takes a bit of practice, but I've found it helps if I keep the dough in the fridge between batches.

and my family always used store bought dough. the kind that comes in a tube fits perfectly in the press!

Yes - we have an old metal cookie press from the 60's. It was originally my grandmother's. However it didn't really corporate for me last year so I ended up using cookie cutters. My mom's going to use it this year and I'm sure she'll have better luck!

@winter_wonder: We just made spritz cookies yesterday! I have the Martha Stewart cookie press from Macy's. And yes, the cookie sheet has to be cold! I run it under cold water after I take each batch out of the oven.

We use the classic Betty Crocker recipe, always with almond extract. It's consistently delicious.

@winter_wonder: Oh, yes, having warm sheets will make the next batch not as good! I remember my mom saying that. We used to run them under cold water for a minute, then let them sit for a while before putting more cookies on the sheet, but my mom has a lot of cookie sheets. She also only uses these old, very thin sheets, thinks the newer insulated ones don't turn out as good cookies.

Oh my god, I (and my mom) really sound crazy now. You can only use THIS press, on THESE cookie sheets, and you must wait for the sheets to cool COMPLETELY. No wonder my mom's come out so much better than mine.

@winter_wonder: I've never tried cookie sheets in the freezer. You might try adding less flour. I find that's my problem when they fall apart.

@Foodnerd81: That's the only one that works! I bought one for myself on Etsy.

@winter_wonder: Did you make sure that your butter is room temp? I found that made a huge difference.

@winter_wonder: my family is borderline obsessed with spritz cookies! I have made them and they come out ok but not nearly as good as my mom or aunts. But we are convinced only the good old metal cookie press works, the new ones just aren't as good. We use the recipe that's on the side of the box, as does my friends family who are also obsessed.

This is the one we have. My aunt bought me and my sisters them on eBay since you can't get them in stores anymore.

Can you recommend a good cookie press? I have one from Pampered Chef but I have a love/hate relationship with it. I don't know if it's the press, the recipe I'm using, me, or a combination of all three that turns spritz cookie making into a disaster each year.

Please give me your tips!
