@Mae: I read somewhere to store new natural peanut butter upside down so when you open it the first time it's less messy to stir the oil in- and it totally works! Give it a try :)

Just updating, I ended up buying Whole Foods brand peanut butter because it didn't have extra ingredients and we spread some on a teething cracker. With a plastic knife of course, haha. He liked it and was totally fine!

I did the peanut test in the parking lot of LO's doctor too - eased my mind a lot to do it that way! For ease of cleanup/no messes, I just gave her some PB from a little single serving cup of PB they sell at my work café, and then threw it away after.

I gave it to her about 20 minutes before her 1-year scheduled appointment.

We were told to introduce nuts around 9 months, we did it in butter form. I just bought natural stuff (what we used at home) and used it as a topping on pancakes, she devoured it.

We haven't tried it yet but for best PB brands I'd recommend TJ's if you shop there ever. The ingredients are peanuts and salt. Nothing else. And it tastes much better than most of the no-sugar brands I think. Only downside is that it does need to be stirred (a lot of natural pb have the oil separate to the top and you have to stir it back together) which can be a little bit messy, especially if you're not used to doing it-- so perhaps put your husband on that job :)

I just let LO lick a tiny bit off a spoon around 7 months. No reaction that time but she wasn't really into it. A month later, a Peanut butter Puffin (cereal that I eat) fell onto the floor and she put it in her mouth and gummed on it (oops!) and no reaction, so after that I just gave her some whenever.

She likes it now at 19 months.

@charlotte: I LOVE Bamba.

We haven't tried peanut butter yet, and the ped said to wait, but I think we will probably ignore her advice. I think we'll try it on oatmeal or on a piece of bread.

@spaniellove: We did very thin peanut butter on a graham cracker. I admit to giving it to him while sitting in the hospital parking lot....and then waiting 20 minutes. We did this the first TWO times we gave him peanut butter. Lol I know this is ridiculous, but whatever. He was fine :)

I already eat the natural type so we had that. I mixed a little bit in with her oatmeal one morning so she could get the taste (and allergens) without the sticky mouth feeling. She likes it a lot but doesn't love it like I do!

We live three blocks from the ped so I just made sure to do it on a day they were open. No family history of food allergies.

My doctor said no to peanuts or peanut butter since they are both choking hazards. Anyone else's doc have the same opinion? I would like to introduce it, but not sure how.

Interesting study related to us by our sons allergist:
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/israelis-babies-peanut-products-escape-125040544.html

My son has a severe peanut allergy (we just gave a tsp at 1 yr and he reacted immediately). Next child I may try Bamba! Our allergist also said we could bring future kids in for a blood test too, given the fam history.

@med appointment is a good idea too though!

Justin's has little individual serving size pouches at health food stores which might be handy since you're just going to pitch it. Key be careful not to grab one with honey because I know they have one.

We were instructed by the paediatrician to introduce it at 9 1/2 months cause its such a calorie dense food and our son is FTT. He LOVES it!!! I bought an all natural brand with no added salt or sugar. I hated the taste of it at first, but now I can't eat the regular stuff anymore as all I taste is salty and sweet! I'm in Australia so te brand probably won't matter to you but I'd go as natural as possible.

Since I've had a lifelong peanut and tree nut allergy, I know nothing about the world of peanuts/peanut butter/tree nut products. But I do know I want to introduce peanut to LO under the age of 1 since newer research shows there's no reason to wait. He's had everything else and other than a dairy allergy he's done fine.

Is peanut butter the best way to introduce peanut? Any particular brands? Obviously I'll be having DH do this and I might just toss the container after he eats it once.
