My mom made me those peanut butter marshmallow squares and it was the best. I would be so hungry during the night feedings and those filled me up quick!

I stashed some baby food pouches in my bag and they were gooood. I went for sweet pouches of fruit or custard and they were brilliant for eating with one hand in the middle of the night.

I took tonnes and then didn’t eat it for my second birth!
I took breastfeeding cookies, lots of nuts, oaty muesli bars,
Juice and coconut water, chocolate... I ate a couple of cookies and drank some juice. But I wasn’t there long - she was born at 10am, I was moved to a room just in time for lunch, had a nap in the afternoon, had a snack then it was dinner time! Went home first thing the next day

For DS1 I didn’t bring any food. Drank some water throughout labour. He was born in the morning and the nurses brought me some toast when I got to my room. I just ate the hospital food and DH and my mom brought me a couple snacks.

DS2 was a csection and I wasn’t packed. After he was born and DH brought me my stuff he also brought me a bunch of snacks.

There was also a little kitchen room we could use to keep food and they had bread, butter, jam, tea, water & juice you could help yourself to. That was really nice.

My favorite protein bar
Trail mix
Tiny oranges

Gatorade and oranges were the biggest winners.

I had toast before labor for DD1. I tried a popsicle during (10 hr labor), and threw it up. The hospital meal after was great.

DD2 I probably ate something in the morning before going to the hospital, definitely nothing during (super fast labor), and I wasn’t hungry after really so just ate hospital food.

For my third baby I couldn’t handle eating or drinking anything during labour. I really had to force myself to take a few sips of water and juice. After he was out I wanted to eat everything. I hadn’t eaten for 13 hours. My midwife brought me some peanut butter toast and I also had cookies and candies and juice boxes. Yum!

I was never allowed to eat once I was admitted. I survived on ice lol. Afterwards I always ate every meal the hospital provided, good or bad since hey, I paid deductible for this lol.

My mom/MIL usually bring "healing" foods from Chinese culture like soups and stuff.

I don't think I brought anything. The first thing I got to eat was some peanut butter & crackers and apple juice, and it was amazing lol I had a C-section (unplanned) and wasn't super hungry from what I remember (even though by that point it had been at least 20 hours since I last ate). Since I had the surgery they wanted to make sure I could keep something down before giving the green light for an actual meal. After that I ate hospital food, but they had good food at mine, and tons of it, so I always had extras to put in my fridge for snacking during the rest of my stay.

@Ajsmommy: It is becoming more normal to not withhold food if it's spontaneous labor, not sure about induction. At any rate I had a birth center birth and eating is encouraged.

We took honey sticks, all natural lollipops, pb and almond butter pouches, protein bars, and coconut water. My birth center provided breakfast after baby was born and we went home 4 hours after birth so we didn't have to worry about food for after. I'd take maybe some homemade sandwiches if they want you to have food for after birth.

Good luck!

@Mommy Finger: I completely forgot to ask my midwife at my appointment yesterday, but will make sure to check next week. Last time we brought snack foods similar to what you mention, but apparently they weren’t “substantial” enough for me post delivery. I think I would have been fine, but my midwives brought me a hospital tuna sandwich to supplement (not my fave).

@Ajsmommy: you’re right...now that I think about it I was only able to eat/drink before being induced, and then not until after delivery. We had packed snacks/food, but my midwives also scrounged up a hospital sandwich for me since evidently they didn’t feel what we brought was sufficient :). It was 4 am, so other options were limited.

For my first labor, I brought Pringles and Gatorade. And maybe some granola bars. Those were all handy during the 3 am feedings!

For my second labor, I didn't really eat any of the snacks I brought. No idea why.

What does your midwife suggest? I basically brought snacks to supplement either the hospital food (not the best) or what people brought for us.

Did a quick search and couldn’t find a thread about this, but feel free to direct me if I’ve missed it ;)

Looking for suggestions for your favourite foods/beverages for before/during/after labour and delivery in a hospital. Our midwife team didn’t think what I brought last time was adequate (although I thought we brought a decent selection), so looking to “up my game” this time :).
