I know when we used to do tummy time, L would try to lift his head and he would fart a bunch. Maybe some tummy time??

@Littlebit: I came across this post because it's breaking my heart to watch my 2 week old baby J strain and struggle to poop or work out his gas. He wakes up grunting and straining and just seems very uncomfortable. If I hear him poop or let the gas out he settles down immediately, but I know that's not easy for little babies.

Just curious if anything specific helped your little one!

I read somewhere that trying to burp them more than 3-5 min is actually counterproductive and can create more discomfort so I stop burping him if I can't get one out of him within 5 min. I also have a super gassy baby and he also has reflux. He was breastfed until recently and I cut out dairy and caffeine while nursing as well as avoiding any and all "gassy" foods and it did seem to help him slowly. It's so tough watching them strain and grunt - hang in there!

Ugh. Nothing is working and it seems to be getting worse. His sleep is getting worse and when he's awake he's constantly straining, grunting, and being fussy.

I have him on the probiotic drops as well as gripe water and haven't had any luck. I cut out chocolate and caffeine the on Saturday to see if that was the issue, but it doesn't look like it. Had his one month appointment today and the dr basically said I was shit out of luck until his stomach gets more developed. We've both been in tears all day :(

Right now we're starting him on formula (enfamil gentlease) to see if it's a breastmilk issue or a digestive issue we just need to wait out. I'm pumping in the meantime.

Have you examined your own diet for potential culprits? For me cutting down on dairy and eliminating things like broccoli seemed to help. There are lots of resources online about breastfeeding diets to help with gas.

Some of the others have already mentioned this but it seems like 4-8 weeks is about the worst. Our doctor explained it that their digestive systems are "sleeping" those first 4 weeks and then when it starts to wake up you seem to have the most problems.

Since you're breastfeeding you could also take a probiotic yourself - then it is passed to the baby in the breastmilk. Might be easier to remember than giving the baby something each day. Also, the football hold (on the babies left side) seemed to work wonders. There were a couple weeks where that position seemed to be the only position he was 100% comfortable in.

Good luck! It will pass.

Nothing worked on M and then he grew out of it around 12 weeks. My doc said that breastmilk is the most gentle thing for his tummy, so just help bicycle legs and lay him on his side when you can.

Subscribing! My guy is 4 weeks today and has a lot of the same issues as @littlebit:. But I've been thinking it is reflux because he spits up like its going out of style. In fact spit up makes it sound tame. It's way more than normal spit up.
But maybe it's gas or a combination of reflux and gas. Seeing a pediatric GI tomorrow so we'll see! But the probiotics I find interesting.

We gave the probiotics before bed because we have acid reflux medication in the morning. Another thing that helped was tummy time, football hold, or resting her on her belly on our knees and patting/rubbing her back. Sometimes she would protest a little at first but as the gas released she would relax into it.

We've had good luck with the "I love you" massage:

http://www.babycenter.com/0_a-fathers-guide-to-infant-massage_3834.bc

After each step, we put our thumbs behind her knees and pushed them to her chest. It helps!

We've also had good luck with gripe water. We would give it to her either before or after she ate. I also avoided broccoli and beans for a while, because they seemed to be a problem earlier. They're not so bad now at 6 months, though. Good luck!

Ok, so I bought the gerber probiotics and mommy bliss gripe water. They don't have much instructions...should I give them before or after feeding him? The probiotics say 5 drops a day. Is that one drop spread out? Or all 5 at once? Should I do that at night? Or a certain time of day? Any help would be appreciated :)

@Littlebit: Aw C had issues with this too-- it's so sad! Not to mention exhausting for you, but mostly it's so hard to see them straining. We did everything you mentioned, plus regular gripe water. I'm not really sure if any of it worked, or if time worked, or what. One thing we started doing that might have helped was doing the gas drops in between sides- I always fed both sides, so I'd do side one, gas drops, side two. Occasionally we would lay her on the floor on a blanket, tummy down, and almost thump her back we were patting so hard, and that seemed to help, even though she usually hated tummy time, but then I was always afraid to let her sleep on her tummy like that. I also tried to limit my caffeine intake at this time-- again not sure it made any difference but it felt like I was doing something at least.

I second (third, fourth?) that it will pass. It's just so hard during.

We had all those issues with DD1 - she was impossible to burp and you could tell she had such painful gas bubbles! What worked for us was probiotics. We started them at 5.5 weeks, just a quarter of a teaspoon (I think) mixed with a bit of BM in a bottle, and her gas troubles disappeared overnight. As our midwife told us, you could treat the symptoms (gas drops) or you could treat the problem (probiotics). Their little digestive systems aren't quite mature yet and helping them grow the healthy bacteria through probiotics can solve a lot of problems. For us, it worked brilliantly.

I'm sorry :( Our LO had a lot of gas issues too. One thing that seemed to help (and she still loves at 4.5 mo) is when you hold her with her back to your stomach/chest and your arm around her belly with your other hand supporting her butt/legs. That gentle pressure on her stomach seemed to really feel good and calm her, and a lot of times walking her around like that while holding her legs up in front of her seemed to help her work out some gas. Also maybe try some gentle massage on her stomach? I think you can google good massages for working out gas. But yea.. unless it is a food issue-- it will just pass. (and then come back. and then pass again. lol)

@Boheme: I didn't realize prescription strength gas drops were a thing! I've spoken to a nurse and had an appointment with the doctor and he never mentioned them. I thought about keeping a food diary but it's never worse at one point or anything based off something i ate, I don't think. It's every time. He's also starting to be more fussy while eating. Latching on and off a lot, grunting, not wanting to latch on at all, acting frantic when my nipple is in his mouth and all he has to do is close his lips!

This isn't necessarily a tip, but an "it-gets-better." I remember going to T's 1 month appointment and describing exactly what you described. His gas was literally waking him up and I just couldn't comfort him! My ped told me that 4 to 6 weeks is the biggest time for them figuring out digestion and that it would pass. I remember at 6 weeks it was a complete 180 - suddenly he was able to comfortably pass gas.

Eta: I was reading over my post and laughed to myself at saying "it will pass" - didn't mean that pun!

Help! My LO will be 4 weeks tomorrow, and for the last two weeks has had horrible gas.

He wakes himself up grunting and straining every time he sleeps which is making us both miserable. He's a horrible burper. We change positions and burp him for like 20 minutes and only *sometimes* get an actual burp out of him.

We're getting pretty desperate. I'm starting to consider trying formula to see if it's an issue with my milk (he's gaining weight like a champ).

Things we've tried already:
Burping
Bicycling his legs
Colic calm
Gas drops
- all of which do basically nothing.

Help!! Any tips or secrets I'm missing? Poor guy is so uncomfortable! :(
