Hopefully the hiccups are gone by now. My favorite method is breathing into a paper bag. Drinking from the far side of the glass and holding your tongue out also work for me sometimes. I like the bag because you can keep doing it if it doesn't work the first time.

I'm a firm believer in the take a deep breath and hold it for 10 seconds, immediately do it again, and again....and again, until they're gone. Or you pass out ;)

@matador84: hopefully they are long gone by now, but my mom always gave us a spoonful of peanut butter. Worked better than water for us.

This works for me 99% of the time. Big glass of water (not ice cold), plug your ears with your fingers, and chug through a straw.

Try drinking a swallow of water with a pencil or sturdy straw held beneath your tongue so it sticks out either side of your mouth. You might spill some- that's ok, just get enough water to make it a real swallow.

The straw changes the position of your tongue (obviously), which shifts your swallowing muscles just enough that I think it calms the flip-out diaphragm. I don't really know. I take a few slow deep breaths after the swallow until I can't feel the liquid moving down anymore. This will also tell me if it worked the first time.

Occassionally I have to take a few straw-altered sips instead of just one, but this method has ALWAYS worked for me.
My hiccups would ordinary last hours, but as I've aged I get them less, but they hurt now.

Don't do it with a carbonated drink.

I get hiccups that last for days. People don't realize how terrible it can be to have them for so long. I've tried everything but the only one that works most of the time is to fill your tallest glass with water, plug your nose and drink the whole glass without stopping/breathing. It works best if you have enough water that you really have to take a breath at the end. The only problem is that if it doesn't work the first time, you're so full of water it's difficult to do it again :-/ Good luck!

Growing up we always used a spoonful of sugar--you throw a spoonful of good old white sugar far back in your mouth but then have to kind of work it down, because it is awkward to swallow. No idea why, but about 95% of the time it works. And it is kinda delicious ;)

Try drinking water out of a glass but from the rim furthest away from you instead of the one closest to you. Looks daft but works every time.

For yourself or your LO? For your LO I read that gripe water helps. For yourself chugging a large glass of water might help.

Drink water and have someone pull down on both your ear lobes. I've heard this really works!

Also, deep breaths.
