You really only need 3 towels at most...we have 12 or 13 hooded towels and I wish I returned two packs! Hooded towels were a popular gift people gave to us AFTER the baby shower/when baby arrived and of course there were no gift receipt and they weren't on our original registries.

We have mostly BRU brand, and while they were great for when he was little, they barely wrap all the way around him now at 12 months, and my LO isn't that big for his age. We also have a larger hooded towel gifted to us that's from The Children's Place and we love it! It's what we use for his swim lessons since it's bigger and thicker.

@lawbee11: @luckypenny: Another vote for 3 Sprouts. Absolute best towel for infants, hands down. They're like blankets; so warm and absorbent. We have the boar, the monkey, and the walrus. I buy them for baby shower gifts all the time. They're a favorite baby item of mine.

Dwell Studio. They are expensive but we got ours for 50% off on ruelala. So absorbent and they are large enough for LO to use as a toddler.

echoing PPs, get the PBK ones on sale in Toddler size!! :)

We had them in both sizes and regularly have two toddler size ones in rotation, while we haven't touched the baby one since like 3 months?

The carter's ones are ok for backup!

We were gifted a PBK towel and love it! The tag says one size so not sure if its a toddler size or what, but it's definitely still big for LO. We have some off brand thin ones from Ross that were also gifted. I don't love them. I end up toweling her off with the thin ones, then bundling her up in the PBK towel. I'd suggest having at least 1 of the PBK towels.

This is when she was 2 days old in the PBK towel after a sponge bath. She has tons of room to grow.

@lawbee11: Fwiw, we only recieved one towel at our showers. I bought 2 PBK ones and love them, but I do think they are pricey even on sale. I would definitely hint about getting PBK ones in toddler size. Anyhow, funny thing is AFTER the baby came I got 2 more towels as gifts and found 2 that I loved at TJmaxx that I couldn't resist buying ( hello kitty and an organic Burt's bees one). So now we have 7 towels! Wth? DH likes to use a clean one every night though so I don't mind. I think 3 would have been the perfect amount.
Oh, and the other towels are a thin Child of Mine one (really too thin for my taste), and 2 First Impressions from Macy's. I'd say my faves for softness and absorbency are the PBK and Burt's Bees ones.

LO isn't here yet so I can't comment on the best ones, but as far as the pricier PBK ones-- maybe after baby is born, you could subtly mention how you want to get a monogrammed one :) I love them and think I'll eventually get the toddler sized one, but I sort of want one with his/her name embroidered on it so I'll just wait.

Also they do go on sale sometimes, or offer free monogramming-- though probably not at the same time.

We used the cater's ones. I think 2 is plenty. I wouldn't buy an expensive one unless you get the toddler size from PBK. That will last longer. We only used the hooded towel for a couple of months and now we just use a regular bath towel.
