They looked pretty bad, no where near the quality I get from adoramapix. I have heard the machines at the retail stores are all pretty much the same but there is some skill needed by the photo tech and how well the machine is calibrated. I haven't seen costco/sams club so I can't speak for them-- but target/walmart/cvs/etc are really bad. I actually got a photo printed at target this weekend because I thought maybe my memory was fuzzy and they weren't that bad (and I only needed one 4x6 and didn't feel like waiting for adoramapix). It was so bad. I was so surprised when I saw the quality because it's the best I've seen from a 1 hour printing place. DH's birthday is Friday and he's been lamenting the fact that we haven't put together any family photo albums since J was born 1.5 years ago (we have one book of newborn photos, but I haven't printed any others except for framed pics).
