Erik Larson - Non fiction but reads like a novel (Devil in the White City, Thundrstruck)
James Rollins - Like mixing Indian Jones and DaVinci Code
I read Orphan Train in a day while on vacation last week

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, it's a combination biography of a family and the science regarding the cells that were taken from Lacks. It's really good science non-fiction for someone who isn't a scientist

Echoing all the other suggestions for Bill Bryson for entertaining but educational non-fiction...he's absolutely hilarious.

Also, not non-fiction, but if you like crime books anyway, you could check out some crime authors that are a little more literary, like Tana French or Kate Atkinson.

The Warmth of Other Suns was really interested! Also, Grit, anything by Malcom Gladwell, and All Joy No Fun by Jennifer Senior.

@lady grey: I actually read that one and thought it dragged on and on... lol. The war stuff was fascinating, but I could've done without most of the childhood and post-war info. But I know I'm in the vast minority on that opinion, everyone else I know who has read it loved it!

@honeybear: @catlady: not necessarily wanting to read war books specifically... that was just an example of one that I heard about :) But i'll look into those!

@bpcmarj: sounds interesting!

@twodoghouse: Haven't heard of either of those, i'll check them out! @looch: @Anya: I'll look at them thanks!

I really like non fiction, it's pretty much all I read now, because I don't have to keep up with a plot.

Bill Bryson is an author I like a lot.

Here are some that I've liked over the years. These are all different topics (not military though):

Freakonomics and sequels
Anything by Malcolm Gladwell (Tipping Point, etc)
Anything by Oliver Sacks (Man who mistook his wife for a hat)
Brain Rules and Brain Rules for Baby

If you want a war book, James Bradley's stuff is very readable and good. I particularly enjoyed Flyboys. For other entertaining, but not overly fluffy non-fiction, try Simon Winchester (esp The Professor and the Madman), Bill Bryson, Tony Horwitz (esp Blue Latitudes), and Dava Sobel (Longitude). I suppose it sounds like there is a theme in the latter two, but Horwitz's book is about Captain Cook and Sobel's is actually about figuring out longitude.

How about Unbroken? It is a bit of a downer but the story is amazing! It was definitely hard for me to put down. I learned a lot about world war 2 and Japanese internment camps...not sure if that's too heavy a topic for ya?

Have you read Nurtureshock? Alex and I are reading it now and it's pretty interesting. I also found The Smartest Kids in the World: And How They Got That Way to be a good read.

I've been reading a lot ever since LO was born. Like... I think I read 50 books in 2014. And like 45 of those were from May-December. I'm reading somewhat less now that she needs to be rocked significantly less, but still a book every week or two.

Mostly I like really crappy books. Like the Law and Order of books haha (for example I read the whole 21 books in the Stephanie Plum series, and am now working my way through the Harry Bosch series).

But I'm feeling like since I"m reading SO much maybe I should try reading books that would like... teach me something. Or expand my world view a little. Or something. Except if I'm being honest I have the attention span of a hamster when it comes to reading, I really need a very compelling/action-filled or funny book to keep me interested.

Anyone have any books that might fit the bill? I just added Ashley's War to my reading list because the author was on Daily Show last night and it sounded both interesting and like I'd learn something about the military.
