My LO is eleven weeks old and over time has slowly moved her own bedtime up from 930ish to 8ish. When she was about four weeks old she started to consistently be ready for sleep at around 915 (it was almost like she could read the clock!) so we started working on a bedtime routine that included bath, feed, swaddle and sleep. Once LO's sleep started to lengthen we started shifting bedtime by 15 minutes each week. I should also mention that I don't let LO sleep past 1.5 hours before bedtime and will feed up to four times in her last wake time.

I think that if you can have a routine that LO associates with night sleep you should be able to gradually move bedtime up without too much trouble.

@jesslc I don't think I would necessarily move the bedtime back with a LO so young. When ds was that age, I did. Is last feeding at 9 and really tanked him up to get him to sleep until 2-3 am. It worked pretty well and I needed him to sleep since I was back at work and all alone during week.

@JessLC: At 9 weeks old, it's not that big of a deal, IMO. We waited to try and set a bedtime until my LO started to set her own schedule. We noticed that she was getting hungry/tired/etc at the same times every day and we worked on it from there. We noticed that at around 6-7pm every night, she would fall asleep and sleep her longest stretch, so that naturally evolved into bedtime.

@JessLC: Yeah, I think at 9 weeks it might still be a bit too early to try and set a bedtime (but I could be wrong, I'm totally thinking back to when LO was that age and how her eating and naps were all over the place).

But by 4 months, I think getting into a routine and setting a bedtime is do-able.

We sleep trained LO at 3.5 months and while it took some time to have a predictable bedtime, we planned out a routine and stuck to it every day. She's 17 months now and she still has the same routine.

I have been wondering how to do this for a few weeks now. LO is 9 weeks and goes down between 10-11pm. I cannot figure out how to move it back...when people say move bedtime back by 10 minutes, what do they mean? I feel like right now it depends on how much she has eaten during the day rather than say a bath or a routine.

Anyway, following this thread because I'd like to know the answer too!

Why are you trying to move his bedtime up? It seems to be a pretty drastic move to me. He might move it up of his own accord at some point...

@rubies I think that is reasonable. I wonder if I should try and drop his 6pm feeding so he'll be hungrier before bed.

It can take several days/weeks but you can try moving bedtime 10 minutes earlier every evening?

I've read all the guides on sleep and recently posted some on sleep training ds. He is 4 months old and DH lives/works out of town allll week. He usually goes down around 830-930, but I would love for him to go down 7-730, I'm just so afraid he won't sleep at night or wake up more earlier. What are your best tips?
