I think the most important thing is the cover. We have the Speck iGuy and we never have to worry about it. And this is after having 2 tablets already shattered (using a different cover).

We have a cheap surface rt that my daughter mostly uses. It was cheap, and I don't care if she breaks it, so it's great.

I didn't even think of a Kindle, I keep thinking they're like a Kobo, and I can't see my daughter being entertained by my e-reader.

Both of my kids have kindles - they have been dropped and still work perfectly - that said they do have a new kindle for kids that will be replaced at no charge if your child breaks it.

We use the Kindle free time app which allows my kids to pick and choose their own things - they are all kid approved. The ones that aren't in there I can download and then put in their free time account.

You can purchase movies and then download them so you don't need an internet connection (I did this with Frozen for DD).

We have been super happy with them! Tons of games, videos, and apps!

My nephew has a Kindle, I believe. My sister got one that has a break-for-any-reason warrenty and allows you to download any Amazon Prime show/movie for 30 days, I believe. I'll check with her on the details. She loves it because he always has stuff to watch, even in the car or on a plane where they don't have wifi.

@Mrs. D: we have a bubble style cover after hubs dropped it and shattered the screen. But unlike an iPad it was relatively easy to replace the screen. So that's an added bonus.

If you get a second gen nexus there are some neat kids covers with handles etc.

@brownie: thanks for your input! Does it have available a cover like an otter box? I'm afraid she'll throw it down our open staircase.

We bought a first gen nexus. We use the Google Play app to purchase and download videos. A nice thing about the Play store is that you can rent movies (they are a bit much but totally worth it). Then those rented movies can be downloaded onto the tablet and watched for 24 hours without internet access.

There are some apps that are not available on it that are available on iPads but so far it hasn't been an issue for us. My son has been able to go back and forth on both iOS and Android since he was 18 months old.

This Christmas we're going on a long drive and flight to visit friends for a week in BC.
We're thinking of giving our daughter her big present early so she can use it while travelling to beat the boredom.

What tablet computer do you recommend? I don't want an ipad since it's so expensive, but the options are endless. I'm hoping to score a deal on Beyond the Rack, but don't want to grab a bad deal.

Something I can download apps on, but don't need to access the internet to use (since we'll be in the car and on the plane).

Suggestions?
