I do what I can (within reason) to have my son sleep the night at our destination, which usually means we do a daytime flight and then sleep when we arrive.

we flew when charlie was 12 months and olive was 10 months. at 12 months charlie slept the whole way at bedtime. at 10 months olive barely slept at bedtime (but at least she didn't melt down!) charlie was 2 1/2 at the time and he didn't sleep a wink.

we've been on 10 flights with the kids at different ages, and now that they're on 1 nap, i definitely think first thing in the morning is the best time when they're well rested and happy. the risk of flying at night is they get overstimulated and can't sleep and melt down!

I flew at night time with a 4 month old and a two and a bit year old, I was so surprised at how SMOOTH it went! I was ready for epic meltdowns and being that lady on the plane (I was even by myself!). However, the flight took off at 8 (and bedtime use to be 6:30 or so), and both of them were asleep before we even left the ground!
When we fly next time I think I'll do a super early flight, but that's mostly because when I prefer to fly. Flying at night did work for me though!

I've never flown with an older baby.... but I think I would rather try at night. It's hard to keep LO entertained!

We're going to be flying back east with our daughter later this summer (she'll be 16 months), and I'm trying to decide what time of day to fly. In the past, we flew during daytime hours, but that was back when we could expect her to take more than one nap each day. If we timed it right, she would nap on each flight. Now she's down to 1 nap, and she is in a stage where she is not at all amused when asked to sit still. I'm wondering if others have had success at flying at night, after baby's bedtime... or is that an even worse recipe for disaster?
