My experience with food/milk has been the same as everyone above's. The best thing we brought when flying with our 1 year old was a bag of miscellaneous junk that we didn't mind losing. Stickers, post its, puff balls, fabric scraps, Popsicle sticks - basically a random assortment of stuff that's fun for a 1 year old but won't leave you digging around in the seats when they drop it.

If you are travelling with a child, bring what you need for them to eat or drink. When you go through security, tell the agent you are travelling with a child and this is what they need for the flight. It needs to be reasonable, so bringing a gallon of milk would potentially get a side eye, but if you bring several 8 ounce packages of shelf stable milk, they will allow you to bring it through. I believe Starbucks and most places now, sell milk in small containers in the airport post security, but it won't be shelf stable.

Additionally, bear in mind that on the plane itself, there is no "fridge" for you to put anything and they really can't or won't heat stuff up for you (at least that's been my experience over the last 5 years) so you need to be as self sufficient as you can on that part.

Other than that, my best tip is to get to know your destination as much as possible...is there a grocery store nearby? It's good to know where they are when you've realized you left something behind!

@Pumuckl: That was a great link! Thanks! Unfortunately, DS2 never took to a paci. This is one of those few times where I wish he would!

@MUI831: You are fine to bring any liquids for kids 6 and under onto a plane. So if you need milk just bring whatever you need. If your DS2 uses a paci that also helps really well for the ears. Both of my kids have flown quite a few times and they always got their pacis for take-off and landing and never cried because of their ears hurting.

Lots of snacks help with my LOs (they were 14m and 3y old on our last flight). We bring one or two books but not too many other toys. You'll just end up looking for them all over the plane.

Also if the flight is around nap time there is a good chance he'll just fall asleep.

I really like the tips this lady has: http://mommyceo.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/sanity-on-a-plane-with-your-babytoddlerpreschooler-dos-and-donts-from-a-frequent-flying-family/

They will let you bring a little cooler on the plane. If an item is opaque they make you do a pat down. If it's clear like a sippy they can lazer it. I like to have everything we need in case security takes too long or there are other delays. Bring snacks that take time to eat like freeze dried apples. Wear him if you can and gate check the stroller. Bring Advil or Tylenol and a thermometer just in case.

We have taken T on 3 round trip flights so far. The longest being 5 hours and it was fine.

If you need milk, you can usually find it, and Starbucks will also sell you just a cup of milk after you clear security.

We're heading out next weekend to go to a friend's beach house and will be taking our 3.5 yo and 1 yo boys. I'm really nervous about how to keep DS2 occupied and happy during the 2 hour flight and then 1.5 hour car ride. DS1 is happily distracted with the tablet so he's not a problem.

What are your best travel tips for flying with a 12 mo? We weren't able to afford a seat for him so he'll be on our laps but we'll have the entire row. I plan on bringing tons of snacks. We're still sort of nursing so I'll try that on take off an landing and will have a bottle as a back up. Can you buy whole WCM at airports or will they let you bring shelf stable milk with you? I just fear that he will not be easily distracted since all he wants to do is move around.

Any tips are appreciated!!!!
