We're getting a second opinion on DHs car today, but been looking. We found an 01 CRV and an 04 Jeep Liberty we like.

My friend drove a 15+ year old Acura integra for a 2-3 years with no issues. He only paid $2000 for the thing and then sold it for nearly $1000 when he was done. I would vote for a Japanese made car. Maybe try looking for an older Acura in your price range.

Have you thought about Hyundai? We have an '02 Sonata that DH bought for $6000 seven years years ago. It had 100,000 on it at the time, but we have since put another 100,000 on it, and it is still going strong! Good gas mileage, easy to drive, not expensive to fix. We love our car and will be sad when it finally does go.

I would look for an older Corolla! IMO, used Toyotas are usually a little cheaper than Hondas, and those are the 2 brands I'd most trust if I were buying an older car. Might also look at Camrys, Civics, Accords, Rav4s or CR-Vs.

I think Toyotas can run a really long time with few repairs. I'm currently driving an old Camry with 200,000 miles on it (we traded out old SUV to DHs parents for this one so they could move to Canada) and it's still going strong and hasn't needed any repair work.

Aw I totally had an '06 matrix that I sold a couple years ago for 6K with 100,000 miles on it! It was good to us :)

I don't think you can go wrong with the family of corolla or Camry or accord or civic! They seem to hit that price point and are reliable

ford fusion, or Honda civic are good options. Also loved my Subaru legacy- mine was still running perfectly at 200k miles, I'm curious how long it would have lasted if DH hadn't totaled it. It was amazing in the snow and overall a wonderful car

I love my Nissan Versa. We bought ours for $15k, but it was only a year old. In two years, all we've had to replace is the battery. It was a rental in its previous life.

Try a ford focus. I had mine for 5 years and she was a beast.

I found it at a ford dealership, it was a fleet vehicle with maybe 6,000 miles on it and I got her for $8,000.

Best car ever.

look into a toyota matrix. I have a 2004 with 170k miles on it. It is starting to rust out underneath, but winters are terrible to cars where we live. It would definitely sell for less than 5k, and I think in the past 3 years I've put less than a grand into it (new starter this winter, brakes were done 3 years ago I think). Every year I take it in for inspection with my fingers and toes crossed, and every year it is fine. They have basically told me that rust is what will end my car, but with patch jobs it has a lot of life left in it.

Also, its a great car- there is a lot of storage space.

Well, DHs 02 Accord just got here from the UK last week... and it's already in the shop. And it's not looking good. The existing car we have is technically his, even though Ive been driving it. So, Im in the market.

I need something small (4 door car or small SUV), decently fuel efficient and reliable... and doesn't cost a fortune to fix.

Suggestions? DH had an Accord, which is fine, I guess. Ive driven a CRV, which I liked but wouldnt want anything much bigger than that.
