@ktgee04: KellyMom says anywhere from 4-10 hours out at room temperature is fine depending on how cool or warm the room is.

Great post, I have been wonderng this too! I plan on being a pumper as well after the first couple week so DH can help out with feedings! I was hoping to try and introduce cold or room temp milk to keep from having to warm up the bottles.

I wish I could feed my LO cold milk! Or even room temperature! I'm confused because isn't the milk straight from the boob warm? Thats why I feel like my LO needs it to be warm when drinking from a bottle.

@yin: I love this idea - I had no idea BM could stay out that long at room temp or even that you could feed cold BM. I think I will definitely try this route first but if he ends up wanting warmed up BM then at least I know I have some quick and easy options!!

My husband puts a glass container with water in the microwave for about a minute and then sets the bottle in the hot water for about another minute (just to get the chill off the bottle).

Isn't there like a 6-6-6 rule? BM left on the counter (freshly pumped) for 6 hours, or kept in the fridge for 6 days, or in the freezer for 6 months?

I was an exclusive pumper and in the beginning kept the milk out at room temperature for my LO. When I pumped enough to store in the fridge, I would feed him cold breast milk. I was informed to introduce either room temp or cold milk early on. Babies drink whatever they are used to. It was one of the best bits of advice I received. I have never heated up a single bottle and so thankful for the convenience of feeding my LO bottles straight out of the fridge.

@Mrs. Bee: This is so helpful!! I have a electric boiler too that I haven't had to use in years but I hadn't thought to use it for warming a bottle. I figured that 'boiling' water may do something to break down the BM or make it less nutritional. Do you simply boil the water, dump it into a bowl/let it cool, then place the bottle in it so it's not in directly boiling water?

I will definitely be trying the room temperature trick if he'll take it that way. As long as it's safe, that would save me and my husband that whole additional step

@ktgee04: we also have an electric kettle that works soooo fast to boil water.

leaving the milk out is the easiest way to do it. but i still warmed it because charlie liked warmed milk. a lot of babies will just take it room temp fine though.

@Mrs. Bee: I had NO idea you could leave BM out at room temp for several hours and still have it be ok. That is definitely good to know. I'm assuming I'll learn a lot more from my LC after delivery but this is great info! Thanks!

Also, I like the idea of running water through a coffee pot to get quick, hot water to put the bottle into. I wouldn't have thought of that

ok this is what i used to do...

1) pump before going to bed and leave that milk out at room temp. don't warm and just feed. as long as the room is not too warm, the milk should be fine for the middle of the night feeding.

2) keep boiling hot water in a thermos. pour into a cup and warm the bottle that way so you can skip the microwave step.

@ktgee04: I believe cold BM is fine, you just have to swirl it to mix the foremilk and hindmilk. Mine wouldn't really mix unless it was warmed. And he wouldn't take it anyway :P took forever to get him to take cold formula!! And haha, that is Wagon Sr.'s favorite country song. He is NOT a country fan but he really likes TK :)

@mrs. wagon: Ha! Yes I'm a TK fan so I got the solo cup reference : ) So you are saying its ok to feed a baby cold BM? I wasn't sure if it HAD to be warmed up. I'm pretty clueless but that would definitely save time if 1) the baby would take it and 2)it's safe for him to drink

similar to using the microwave like @chopsuey119, my sister-in-law uses her keurig. she just takes the k-cup out, so just the hot water goes back into the mug. it's quick, and doesn't really require much work.

I use a bottle warmer and heat in a glass bottle because it conducts heat the fastest.

Before I had the warmer, I would keep almost boiling water in a thermos and warm the bottles of pumped milk(glass bottles) in a mug.

I'd keep bottles of freshly pumped milk in the mini fridge upstairs, in individual serving sizes. At least 3-4 bottles on hand at all times. Then when I got up for the feeding, I'd run the hot water in the tap and when it got hot, I'd fill a red solo cup (toby keith fans?) with hot water and plop the bottle of cold pumped milk into it. Then I'd get everything else ready for the feeding (we used drop-ins so I'd assemble the bottle and turn on the light, etc) and by the time I was done the water would be lukewarm, and I'd pour the milk into the drop-in and feed.

If it was a bag of frozen milk, I'd place it inside a large ziplock bag and run the hot tap over the bag in the sink.

I wish we had gotten him used to cold bottles from the beginning because it would have saved this step!! (you can leave a bag of frozen milk to thaw in the fridge in a container for the next feeding.) But he got warm bottles until we weaned and started on formula.

After the first few weeks, I plan on trying to pump exclusively so that my husband and other family members can feed our LO after he comes in Aug. I'm a first-timer so I was wondering what is the best/fastest way to warm up breastmilk in the middle of the night? Bottle warmer? Or is it ok to feed LO cold BM? Room temperature? I'm just not sure! Any help or insight would be appreciated! Thanks! :-)
