Something like this?

https://www.amazon.com/Blueberry-Training-Bundle-Medium-Mermaids/dp/B07552GVQY/ref=sr_1_11_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1513285044&sr=8-11&keywords=cloth%2Btrainers%2Bdiapers&th=1

Then use liners (fleece or disposable).

It sounds like potty training is going to take a while, so investing in these may be worth it (both $ and poop wise)

this way he doesn't have to give up on big boy undies, he will still get the wet feeling, but much less mess to deal with!

1) I agree to stop and try again later (I started too early and it’s now been years of accidents. I did it because the school required it but it was horrible.)
2) throw them away? J/k I like the ideas for cleaning above!

Thanks everyone. I had a crazy day at work but I was reading the comments.

@Myicitygirl: I tried your toilet method tonight and it was easier than what I was doing.

I don’t think I’m stressing potty training at this point and I don’t have any kind of timetable. I expected this poop part to be really difficult so the idea didn’t even cross my mind until DCP said he was ready and DS was into it. I was relieved this weekend when DS announced he wouldn’t go potty anymore and asked me to put it in the garage. But he asked for it back 3 hours later. He loves the potty (at home) and he’s so proud of himself. He also loves the underwear. I feel bad making him stop when he thinks he’s doing well. But this is a ridiculous amount of poop.

@Baby Boy Mom: Sure, I’d like to hear what worked for you.

I experimented with elimination diets a lot in the beginning - when his diet was much simpler. I took DS to a GI specialist at 1yo but I was just told to stop experimenting and just do Miralax. Unfortunately DS is 4th generation of GI issues (that luckily skipped DD). The GI specialist urged me to get DH checked out to try to figure out what might be going on in him and MIL. I am resentful that DH won’t (and has never) seen a doctor for his self-diagnosed IBS. His mom is on some meds and his grandma had part of her intestines removed. DH’s family is really fatalistic about it. They just think have bad systems and nothing can be done.

@looch: My son also goes shortly after taking his Miralax. If he doesn’t poop in the morning we always realize that we forgot to give it to him.

@gingerbebe: Good point about the urges. I think there might be too much variation between his types of poop (firmer/soft). He’s been eating more fruit this week and having more accidents so there may be a threshold he can’t control at this point. He also classifies “poop” and “caca” differently. I’ll have to pay more attention to see if he’s referring to different textures. (Oh, things I never expected to write).

And (directed at no one in particular) I realize it sounds obvious, that if he’s having too many softish poops to just cut out or cut down the Miralax. It sounds so logical but it just doesn’t work for him.

@bhbee: ok thank you for the info!
Yeah he has some minor constipation issues as well. He also goes only every other day sometimes every 2-3 days and it can be a strain. It’s not because he’s holding it either, his body is just sluggish with poop I guess. So I do wonder if that is a factor. I think he just has an easier time, mechanically, standing vs sitting. When he sits he says he doesn’t know how and can’t do it.
Anyway, I know the day will come, my ped reminds me that he won’t go to kindergarten in diapers and it won’t be on his college application.
And 100% agree Id rather clean 1 dirty diaper vs multiple poop accidents. I remind myself of that when I get frustrated with the potty training, and I also ask myself this - am I more frustrated for him or because it’s inconvenient for me?
Anyway, thanks again :-)

@SweetiePie: it took over a year from pee trained for us, i do think she’s probably an extreme because of the constipation/withholding in the past and some sensory issues. And it was super fun when i had a baby in diapers too, but in retrospect dealing with a messy pull-up was way easier than poop accidents and withholding issues. I did try to force it once because i was so over it but of course it was a massive failure ... she never does things before she is ready and then one day, bam, never an issue again. I hope your magical potty day comes soon :silly:

@bhbee: Sorry to threadjack, but how old was DD when she decided on her own to switch to the potty? I’m still OK with waiting but I’m so curious as to when he’ll actually do it. Like so many things in parenting, it feels like it’ll never happen but I know it will.

I’m with @SweetiePie: - my dd needed miralax (she still takes half cap every other day at almost 6) and it took her a long time to poop on the potty, but she was pee trained and asked for a pull-up to poop for a long time. And one day she just did the switch to the potty! I could have her places she needed to be trained because she would wait to go poop at home, but with 4-6x a day i see that’s not an option. It’s a tough one but i was glad we waited until she was ready.

Mostly sending lots of hugs because these issues are so stressful and feel like they will never end! But i promise they do!

Holy crap! :silly:

Sorry, I couldn't resist. My son is 2.5 and he's been trained for a couple months now. He is usually pretty consitpated too and I've tried multiple different remedies for that like juice and Culturelle probiotics. With his issues, he is more like an every-other-day pooper.

He probably makes it to the potty about 60% of the time for poop, which means a couple accidents per week (mostly at daycare). When the underwear is really messy, I just tell daycare to throw it out.

Incidentally, I tried some Miralax for a couple of days to see if it would help and I think it was more than he needed because this morning he had a big messy accident. Now I need to go buy more PJ Masks underwear.

ETA: If I were you, I'd just use pull-ups until you figure out the pooping thing. I didn't see much difference between putting underwear on under a pull-up and just a pull-up. They still know it's there. Now that DS is trained he HATES the feeling of the wet pull up in the morning.

I honestly think that pooping that many times a day is an issue...I had a long drawn out saga with one of my LOs regarding constipation. And after years of trying what seemed like everything, the thing that finally worked to get him going regularly (not constipated, not runny, not last minute, just "normal") was a complete diet overhaul. I can go into more details if you want, but essential none of the "fixes" actually worked long term.

My concern with putting off poop potty training is that it may confuse your son, or upset him if he feels that he “failed”. My son was pee trained before 2.5 but pooped in his underwear for a month because he had some mental hang ups about it. I kept wanting to give up but continued with the encouragement and then after a month, he finally decided on his own it was time and he’s been great ever since. I don’t know how long it would take your son, but I would talk to the daycare to see how they can work with you. And 4-6x a day is a lot so maybe he needs to back off the Miralax?

It May be too early. Pooping 6x a day? That’s a lot. I didn’t attempt to train DS1 until he turned 3. Even then I probably could have waited longer since it took him while to get pooping down.

This sounds gross too, but are they underwear smears of poop like he starts to go but then holds it back? Or a full on BM in the underwear? If its a full BM I would assume he's not ready.

Yes, I did like using a wet bag just because it wasn't all crammed into a plastic bag but bottom line you still have to spray it off before washing.

I would back off. My thought is that because he's on Miralax, he may not have that typical "I'm gonna need to poop here" urge with 1-2 big turds a day and its more like "woop, there it is" in smaller volume several times a day. 4-6 times a day sounds like things are just kinda flowing through there constantly and I don't think that its really clicking for him the way pee or a regular bowel movement would be.

I think its more important and healthy that he has regular bowel movements, and if it means he's gotta wear diapers for a while longer, fine. I agree with @looch: that daycare could try putting him on the potty at set reliable times during the day and give his body a chance to somewhat regulate the times at which it wants to go. That could be the first step in poop training a child who may not have definitive urges.

@Corduroy: According to my son's gastro, the best time for a bowel movement is about 15 minutes or so after a meal. I would ask the daycare to bring him to the bathroom after breakfast and lunch, and also after snacks. It might also help if they kept a log as to when he had a movement to help figure out the best time to take him.

Given that your son is on Miralax (as is mine), I have isolated his "best time to go" as in the afternoon, between the time he comes home from school and dinner (so for us, between 4 and 6). I fully understand that ML is not a laxative, but my son drinks his dose in the car ride home from school and he will go soon after. I don't know what it is, but even the gastro said it shouldn't have that kind of effect but it does!

I'm with @SweetiePie: Our son wasn't poop trained for months after he was pee trained. We went pack to pull-ups since he was just treating his underwear like a diaper when it came to poop anyway. He was pee trained around 2.5, but poop trained didn't come until after 3.

I think it's time to take a step back, continue with pee on the potty and trying to catch him pooping or asking if he needs to poop... but I'd go back to pullups.

I know it’s not the advice you were looking for and I try really hard to not do this often, but I think it could save you a lot of stress.

It honestly sounds to me like he’s just not ready. Pooping underwear 4-6 times a day is a LOT.
Some kids just aren’t ready until 3 or later and that’s ok. You also don’t want to traumatize him with all of it. Does he pee in the potty?

My son is 3 (in sept) and he is fully pee trained but not poop trained. BUT he knows to wait for a diaper before he poops. He has very rare pee accidents (like once every 2 weeks and it’s rarely emptying full bladder...it’s usually that he starts a little because he’s distracted but he can stop and finish in the potty) and he’s only had ONE poop underwear accident in 4 months.
I’ve talked to my ped and she is totally ok with this and says it’s 100% normal. Pee trained is VERY common before poop trained and she said not to pressure, he will poop on the potty some day soon. So we always ask if he wants to try. 1/10 times he’ll sit on the potty but can’t get it out. I give him a diaper before he becomes too constipated or distressed (happens easily for him) because I don’t want him to associate the potty and poop with pain and anguish.
I think if in a couple months he still isn’t voluntarily on the potty I will become more aggressive with my approach (not because it bothers me but because I think at 3.5 he is perfectly capable but just being stubborn).
His school isn’t bothered at all that he needs a diaper to poop (but it’s only happened a couple times), they aren’t even phased by it. And actually he’s not the only one. There are 5 kids in his 3yo class and the two boys (him and one other) need diapers to poop! I’ve also been told it is more common in boys.

And fwiw I was stressed like “we need to potty train!!!” Starting around 2-2.5 and we started and stopped a couple times. I finally let it go when I realized he just wasn’t ready and it’s been so much more relaxing. It didn’t seem to cause major issues to go back to all diapers with him. When he turned 3 he was obviously ready and he barely skipped a beat going to underwear all day AND night except for the 15 mins a day or every other day he needs to poop. That is fine by me.

So anyway I say all of this to give a different POV and just to hopefully take away any stress or worry about feeling like you NEED to do this right now. Unless someone says it’s required to potty train (like dcp, which I tend to disagree with because potty training is developmental) don’t feel so stressed. You’ll be much happier :-)

I only have advice about cleaning poopy underwear because I went through a similar phase at home (it was truly soul crushing).

What saved me was getting a box of latex gloves. Put on gloves and swish the underwear around in a clean toilet. It gets the solid poop off and then you simply flush. Then I would soak the underwear in a solution of hot water and Oxyclean or bleach, then wash.

Invest in a diaper sprayer. It will help get the poop off much more efficiently. Sometimes it also helps to pre-soak the poop a bit before you spray it off.

DS, just turned 2.5, is on week 3 of potty training. He has been doing ok at home but not so great at Daycare. He poops 4-6 times a day at Daycare. So I’m getting 4-6 pairs of soiled underwear to clean every night. Since DS doesn’t have a great potty success rate at Daycare they insist on pull ups over the underwear. DCP isn’t ready to give up yet but I’m about ready to throw in the towel/underwear.

At home I can usually catch when DS starts to poop and get him to the potty but he only poops about 3x a day at home. I understand DCP can’t watch him that closely and he might not have as many tells there.

DS is chronically constipated and on Miralax. I’m scared to adjust things there because it took us a year to get to this manageable (when diapered) place.

Are there any cloth diaper tips that would help us manage? I’ve seen diaper liners. But if he has a pull up over his underwear and a diaper liner in his underwear I’m not sure there’s a point to even sticking with underwear. Would a wet bag help? Gah- there’s just so much poop.
