Try neti potting! You can buy the packets of solution mix, but we make our own with 1/2 cup of sea salt and 1/2 cup of baking powder and then just use 1/4 teaspoon for each pot. If its post-nasal drop, then that will help clear it up.

For a straight up cough, the best solution I've found is sipping a small glass of red wine slowly. I don't know why, but it helps that ticklish feeling. You'll have to drink more water to compensate, but you're probably drinking plenty with the breastfeeding and a few ounces wont hurt the baby.

@ShootingStar: I feel like it's just that I'm hardly getting any sleep and am just really run down in general so it's not getting better. I'd rather avoid antibiotics but I'll mention it to the pediatrician on Tuesday when we go back (because she's awesome and I ask her everything at this point).

@maybebaby: so I bought elderberry pastilles with vitamin c and zinc and honey. Plus echinacea, and ricola honey lozenges. Hoping that helps. I think we also have plains musinex if that doesn't help. I hate being sick.

If you've been sick for that long you probably have a sinus infection. A month or two ago I had the same thing - terrible cough that I thought was bronchitis, but the dr said it was a sinus infection with post nasal drip causing the chest congestion. Are antibiotics ok for breastfeeding? I'd probably try to go to urgent care or something tomorrow.

@MoonMoon: I almost bought elderberry syrup yesterday but wasn't sure how effective it was (for $13 a bottle). I definitely am coughing up a little mucus so I feel like I need to resolve that before the cough will go away. Earlier it was just a tickle in my throat kind of cough.

I'm still unreasonably mad at my husband for bringing this cold home right when we had the baby!!

I'm so sorry! I think coughs are the most frustrating thing, especially because they hang on for 2-3 weeks after being sick. There aren't that many medications that really help coughs either. This sounds weird, but I find sucking on citrus seeds really soothing, because of the coating they have on them. In addition to honey, I also put tons of fresh lemon juice in my tea. Have you ever tried elderberry? I drink it as a tea, it's also soothing. Licorice and mallow herbal teas would help too, or at least those ingredients show up in throat comfort tea blends a lot.

I was going to say honey & lemon ... There were some Riccola (sp?) cough drops that were BFing friendly, and really eased my cough. They were in a yellow bag.

What are your favorite or most effective cough remedies? I've had a cold for almost two weeks, since shortly after coming home from the hospital with the new baby. Of course, not getting enough rest, but that won't be changing any time soon.

I'm stuffy, post nasal drippy, and have a chest cough that will not go away- which is totally awesome with a newborn who only likes to sleep on me.

I've had loads of honey- in tea, in hot water and lemon, on a spoon. Other than that and OJ, what else will help? I have been given the ok the take sudafed if I need it as I seem to have too much milk anyway, just not sure how much it will help a cough anyway.

The poor baby has a stuffy nose but luckily that's it so far!
