Our boppy...it gets the job done but I much prefer the my brest friend nursing pillow, especially when we were struggling with nursing when LO was first born.

I hate the Puj Tub. She's only 14lbs and she doesn't fit in it, water goes everywhere!!! It's great and I loved it when she was a newborn. I also don't like the bumbo seat, she arches her back and if we weren't always watching I'm sure she go crashing out the back. Also this time around I didn't like the pack 'n play or the Boppy Pillow. My 1st I used the PNP so much as well as the Boppy.

I'm going to try and sell all of it.

Read the Baby Bargians book - it will help you figure out what you really need and what is completely over-rated. Example - cribs from Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn Kids brands are C rated.

we don't have baby yet, so I can't advise as to what we have like best/dislike most, but I've bought pretty much everything second hand {ie puj tub}, or been gifted it {ex: boppy/bumbo}. we're also planning on buying pretty much all the baby's clothing second hand & are being handed down a lot of stuff {except for the coming home outfit}. everything out there is just so stinking expensive that we've tried not to buy pretty much anything new. our only exceptions so far have been the crib mattress, car seat, & some of the cloth diapers as we were thankfully able to score a pretty big set off craigslist. I figure this way even if something disappoints, at least we didn't pay full price for it.

I second getting the book "Baby Bargains" - great reviews and down to earth advise on what to buy.

I agree that you definitely don't need a brand name crib since there's no moving parts on the crib, you also don't need a fancy motorized swing, or a changing table (just use the changing pad on top of a flat surface).

@artbee: eek. what's that called when women eat dirt and all? i think your dog might have it haha.

i don't have any experience yet with baby products, but i do know for a FACT that i tend to buy the "cheaper" things, which i end up tossing and buy the more expensive name brand stuff. =T unfortunately, for the MOST parts, i think you get what you pay for.

i say stuff like car seats, strollers, baby crib furniture - stuff that should last a long time or protect your baby, it's better to splurge. but stuff that they'll only wear once or so (clothes) is something that maybe we don't need to spend so much money on.

New products come out all of the time, so what is great now will get replaced by something else.

Brand name doesn't equal gteed safety, even a reputable car seat maker like Britax has recalls, so you should see what car seat fits your car rather than going for some random recommendation.

Also, all cribs that are sold in the US must meet minimum safety requirements, so whether you spend $100 or $1000, your crib issnt any more or less safe.

Read Baby Bargains, great resource!

@Rubies: Yes. He's broken into her room (the door was shut) when we were gone and managed to open up her diaper pail to lick the poo off the diaper. He also eats his own puke. He's pretty gross.

@Sweet T: That's exactly how I feel about our Chicco stroller. Unlike other strollers I've tried, I'm glad that it's so easy to push with at least one hand.

As far as expensive stuff, we mostly went with everything that was the middle of the road. We did get a more expensive pump and monitor, but I feel they were worth it.

I hated the PUJ tub. I don't see how it could be useful for anyone with a standard size sink. We only used it 2 or 3 times.

I can't really think of any other big name/popular items that i hate but I was really disappointed in the PUJ after reading all of the amazing reviews.

We have a Chicco stroller and I really love it. It isn't the cheapest stroller but it's affordable. It's easy to collapse and it rides smoothly. My only complaint is about the basket underneath. It's not very big and it's pretty much impossible to get to if the seat is lying flat (like when the carseat is snapped in).

I'd agree that it's the biggest waste to spend a lot of money on brand-name clothing. Two-thirds of Baby Y's wardrobe is Old Navy. Yeah, it's not going to hold up for the ages ... but considering he often only spends a couple months (if that) in a particular size, it doesn't have to!

I don't think I bought big brand names for anything in particular except maybe if you count furniture. But I just wanted nice furniture since besides the crib, we will be able to use everything all throughout LO's childhood so I felt like that was worth it.

I agree with @chopsuey119: Babies really don't need much. Actually, I don't even think toddlers need much either. Everything is kind of excess I think. We just buy the basic necessities and a few toys and my LO is a happy camper. The necessities I do buy, though, I try to look for quality and design and don't mind spending a little more for it.

I don't have my LO yet, but when I nannied, the diaper genie was fantastic. Only downside was having to empty it..it made up for all the hidden smells with each diaper!!! LOL! whoo-ee.

we plan to register for baby jogger city mini stroller, and I'm so excited. I have never used one (and my opinion might be different if I had extra money!) but I can't justify spending the 1000+ on those brand name strollers. hot damn..lol my CAR was 4000!

I would invest in a good/safe car seat and a nice crib (if you're going to get one). Everything else, buy cheap! We have one stroller (Maclaren Volo) and hardly ever use it. Baby goes into the Ergo or we carry her. Babies don't need much.

i'd have to say the bugaboo. i have a bugaboo chameleon. we bought it in 2007. it was the "it" stroller back then and served it's purpose well when my eldest was using it. however, a lot of strollers have come out since then and bugaboo hasn't really kept up to date with the competition in regards to features. their new double stroller costs $1,200-$1,700. it's really ridiculous. my Chameleon is for sale now since after the newborn phase, I just used a Maclaren a lot for #1. And now for #2, we have an UppaBaby Vista with Rumble Seat (a double) I scored on Craigslist for a great price.

We have a Babyjogger City Select stroller, it was more than most people I know would spend on a stroller but worth it for us, as we are very active and wanted a stroller that would be portable, sturdy and easy to use, and has room for 2 when the time comes for the next one.

Diaper genie is like the pack n play. You either love it or hate it. I regretted buying the pack n play but LOVE my diaper genie.

I honestly think brand name clothes are a waste of money. Kids outgrow clothes SO fast and make a mess anyways. I just buy cute and inexpensive clothes from H&M or BabyGap and don't feel guilty about it.

As I dive head first into this world of all things BABY. I've realized that with any other retail product, there are big, brand names that are sought after by many mommy/daddy parents...

I'm all for spending the $$ on good, reputable brands... but at the same time, am not one to spend the $$ just for the name.

So for the mommy-bees out there, what products are overrated and not worth the huge popularity/following in baby land?
