@Grace: Yes, they are assembling the bed.

@whiskers: So I think if we do a car nap it will be okay - there won't be that association. She LOVES her crib so I am a little concerned that she will be distressed, but we've been really hyping the big girl bed and tonight she said, "I want a big girl bed for {LO}," so I'm hoping we'll be in good shape!

@lawbee11: @Foodnerd81: I am leaning pretty heavily toward the car nap for the reasons you mentioned!

I hope it doesn't come to it but I will definitely Prime the OK To Wake clock if need be!

I would not introduce at nap time. That's what we did and it was a disaster (she didn't nap at all and kept climbing out). The good (?) part about her not napping was she was really tired at bedtime so went to sleep easily and didn't climb out that night. I'd do car nap and introduce at night.

As the parent of a not so great sleeper, I would probably try the car nap idea. A slightly shorter nap wouldn't be bad, ensuring she is tired for bedtime, but no overtired like she would be with a skipped nap. And I would be wary of doing nap in the bed and having her not nap and associating bed with trouble sleeping. So, my vote is car nap.

And I would talk up the bed, talk about how exciting it is having it delivered, what the delivery guys are doing. But that's just my feeling, C's big bed has been in her room since before she was born.

And if you do have trouble, I can't recommend the OK to Wake clock highly enough. I absolutely can't believe how well it's working. She skipped nap the other day and still stayed in her bed the entire time until the clock lit up. Unbelievable.

Is she reluctant to transition? I think she will take cues from you, so I would just talk positively about it when it is being delivered and set up. I would just attempt the nap, because I wouldn't want her to associate the bed with no naps.

Are the delivery people assembling the bed? Why not leave it in the living room until after nap and assemble it then?

Bonus related question!

I will have to be home with LO (DH at work) when it is delivered. Of course I am going to have to show them her room and she will see the workers going in and out of her room. Should I do my best to distract her in case it is distressing and undermines the transition, or should we just face it head-on and go see what the delivery guys are doing and talk about how exciting it is?

Can you tell I would stand on my head and recite the Declaration of Independence if it meant this transition doesn't totally mess up her sleep!?

The BGB is getting here on Tuesday morning between 8:30 & 10:30 AM! We will have to take her crib down that morning to make room. I was really hoping we could have it delivered and assembled after nap time so that the first foray into the BGB would be bedtime when I have DH as reinforcement and she's also more tired, as nap time is usually the bigger struggle.

Options:

1) Introduce the BGB at nap time and attempt nap in the bed. Very concerned this will go awry! But it's the most logical thing to do since it's there and that's where she's going to nap.

2) Have a car nap and introduce the BGB at bedtime. (Car naps are rare for us because she sleeps so well at home - but she does go to sleep pretty easily in the car and a car nap has never disrupted her nighttime sleep the following night.)

3) Skip nap and introduce the BGB at bedtime. She does pretty well with skipping naps and DH is in favor of this so she will be more tired and want to go to sleep rather than try to get out of her new bed. I'm nervous about this because of the overtiredness factor.

What say you?
