DD#1 will be 2 1/2 when LO#2 arrives and I've thought of doing this too. Great ideas everyone, she already has an "I'm a big sister" book which we read constantly (mostly because my aunt put $1 bills between the pages which fell out the first time we read it so now we have to look for the $ each time we read it).

A book is a good idea. DS got a bracelet that said "big brother" on it, (like those rubber ones) and LOVED it.

A family I know gave the big sis a beta fish. To this day, she says the fish came from the hospital, just like her baby brother. I thought it was cute and taught some reponsibility... The big sis takes care of it (feeds it), like her mom takes care of the new baby. She also was given free reign to name her fish which she loved.

ETA: I'm a Big Sister by Joanna Cole is a good book...

I think a big sister gift is a GREAT idea! My friend prepared a gift for her #2 to give to #1 and vice versa.
Another great thing she did was she made sure the baby wasn't in the room when her #1 came to the hospital. They had someone wheel the newborn into the room after she and her hubs were reunited with #1.

hmm..the older of the two LOs I nanny was almost 3 when her little sister was born. she honestly didn't seem to notice the gifts or anything like that - she was just thrilled to get to hold a real live baby! mom (and I, because I nannied the day they came home!) included her a great deal in bringing diapers and wipes, blankets, cloth diapers for burps, etc.

personally, as the nanny and not the mom, I had bought her a "you're a big sister card!" with a couple Olivia books (her favorite show at the time). she didn't really get that it was for having a baby, just was excited about getting a gift!

ETA - if your girl has a favorite show/book etc, you could have the baby get her a book or one of the $5 dvds they have at target with a few episodes! "baby knew you LOVED mickey mouse, so she wanted you to have a special book!" etc.

ETA again (sorry, lol!) - when my brother was born, I got some big sister books. but the best thing I got was the pictures and video. I have a photo of us (I was 5, he was maybe 6 months?) in a frame now that I love to look back on!

I'm planning on doing this, but I think it will be a toy and some stickers. My daughter is two and doesn't really get it and I don't really want to do a keepsake. I guess I'm more focused on it being a fun thing for her to add to the excitement of having a baby sister. I've been thinking about getting her a little people dollhouse, but I don't know.

Instead of a gift for her, maybe she could do a craft as a gift for her new little sister, something to go with the card she's made?

My older sister made yarn dolls while mom was in labor with me and one of our younger sisters. It was a nice way of giving her something fun to do while waiting, and made her feel more important to the process. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Yarn-Doll

DD1 is 3 and seems to grasp the idea that "Baby Sister" is in Mommy's tummy and coming soon. We took her to "Big Sister class" at the hospital where she made a card for LO and got to see the hospital so I think that helped a little.
However, I want to get a gift for DD1 from Baby Sister so that when she comes to the hospital we can tell her that LO brought it with her because she was excited to meet her or something. I already bought her a Big Sister t-shirt to wear to the hospital because I hope the nurses and staff will make a big deal over her.
But I have NO IDEA what LO should get her. She's only 3, so I don't want it to be a keepsake (necklace or something) that I'll have to take away from her right away to keep safe. But I don't want it to be a toy that she'll get over right away either. She has baby dolls already so that's out.
I suppose I could do one keepsake and one toy just to cover both bases but I want it to be special and I just don't know.
Anyone bought a Big Brother/Sister gift?
