Our biggest ticket item was the crib, and I bought it from Walmart. Haha. Okay it was $300, and that is pricey for a crib compared to the more affordable price points. We wanted a crib made of wood (no mdf) with non-toxic stain. It was really difficult to find a crib that fit the description because most manufacturers can be very vague about materials used.

We also invested in an organic mattress, but it wasn't as expensive as originally estimated. We found a great price through Costco online.

@Looch, The Baby Bargains book was sooooo helpful in sorting out what I did and didn't need, I buy one for all of my friends who are expecting.

I like my BOB stroller to jog with her but we got it for a good deal off craigslist, other than that we dont use a stroller just carry/wear her.
I love my snugabunny swing.

I'm giving myself a strict dollar limit on all items of $200 each. Anything more is just too expensive for us. I firmly believe a lot of the $300/400+ items, it's like Louboutins, you're paying for the label.
@Looch,
I LOVE baby bargains! 85% of the baby items on my short list are from that book.

I din't see this mentioned in this thread, but a great resource on where to spend money and what to skip is Baby Bargains. As an example, all cribs sold in the US must meet the same safety requirements, so whether you spend $100 or $1000 you essentially get the same function.

We didn't spend a lot on the crib, as an example. We got a basic model from Ikea that I won't feel bad about donating when my son outgrows it. I didn't want to go with a grow with you convertible crib, because honestly, my tastes change so much that I didn't want to be tied down to a certain style when doing a bib boy room.

Our two biggest ticket items were the carseat/stroller (Peg Perego) and a nice upholstered rocker/recliner. The rocker/recliner was totally worth it cause I pretty much slept in it the 3 weeks before delivery when I couldn't stand sleeping on my side anymore; I love it cause it's so comfy (it's where I nurse my LO)

our biggest expense was on our glider from giggle. we are so glad we splurged on it though. it's so comfortable. it also doesn't even look like a baby item... it's in our living room actually.

second biggest item was our bugaboo chameleon. I don't mind having spent so much on it though because we've used it through two kids now and it has held up so well. last year's snowstorm left the streets in an icy, slushy mess too and there's no way our maclaren lightweight could've trudged through streets not shoveled yet. in NYC we have no car, the stroller is literally like our car, so it was fine spending alot on a stroller.

everything else, besides gifts, I sold/bought on craigslist or through my local mom's group.

a crib....just because we bought it in the states and had to have it shipped here to tokyo. the quality of cribs here is really lacking. they look really cheap and are low quality, plus they all have the drop down sides, which we didn't want.

I bought a lot of stuff used. You really don't know what your needs will be until you actually use it, and your needs change over time. I'm glad that we didn't invest in an expensive stroller because now Charlie likes his umbrella stroller best. (You can easily buy used expensive strollers.) We splurged on the crib (unnecessary but it was a gift), the video monitor (a must have for us), organic mattress, and the most expensive thing we bought was a glider from land of nod. But that sucker is soooo comfortable and we've spent so many hours in it. Totally worth it.

@Chopsuey, what exactly didn't you like about it? We would never spend that much money without trying it out first, but it seems like it has such great reviews. Which stroller are you looking at now?

uppababy vista stroller (since we are suburb-ites with an SUV), britax marathon convertible carseat, video monitor, and custom upholstered glider/ottoman. I got amazing deals on all of them except the glider/ottoman though.

@Jenna I wanted to get the Stokke, but when I saw it in person and tried it out I wasn't as impressed. I suggest going to buy buy baby (if there's a location near you) and trying out all the strollers.

I think the biggest single item we buy will be the stroller based on my research, I really have fallen for the UppaBaby Vista when I have played with it. I think behind that will be the crib and change table, then the car seat. Everything else is fairly inexpensive, and I think we have a lot of hand-me-downs coming our way (we have to go pick them up from SIL's).

I'm in denial. I said we wouldn't even think about gear til the second trimester and I'm sticking to it! I know that strollers, cribs, and car seats are pricey and we'll probably end up spending more $$ on that stuff.

car seat, stroller, arm's reach travel crib, organic mattress. i think those were our big $ items. we saved in a lot of other areas. high chair, crib, rocker, etc.

Honestly, I don't even use my stroller because I wear Wombat all the time. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have gotten one and got a car seat by itself.

Our two big ticket items were a travel system and crib. Everything else was icing.

To me, the only thing worth a hefty price tag are items that can be used for a very long time in multiple configurations. As an example, a Britax Boulevard convertible car seat.

If I were doing the stroller all over again, I'd do a Phil and Teds as it has a good footprint as a double stroller.

What items have you decided were worth a large price tag? What were their selling points?

Obviously things may change, but for now we're planning on spending the most money on a stroller (We really want the Stokke Xplory).

I think it will be hard to find a stroller better suited to my husband's height than the Xplory... plus, it just looks really cool : )
