@hilsy85: It's tough because some days she's totally into cheese, and then the next day she won't eat it! I feel like I'm wasting so much food, because she eats things one day & hates them the next! Ugh.

@photojane: could you consider making your own fruit/veggie pouches and adding olive oil/butter to the veggies, sauteeing/roasting them, and then pureeing them? Or lots of full fat dairy if she likes it--melted cheese on everything, full fat yogurt, etc!

@photojane: That is tough! DS also goes through phases where he loves something and then won't touch it again - cheese sticks and yogurt for him. We are still experimenting to see what works. The doctor told us not to let him eat anything unless he is in the high chair because he's a grazer and just wants to eat on the go. But we tried and overall he just eats a lot less. So don't be afraid to try new things and just see what happens. What is working at the moment is letting DS out of his high chair the second he starts acting bored and then let him come back to the table to finish his meal in the following half hour or so. So like he'll run around and then stop by the table and eat a little more. Usually he will finish most of his meal that way but if we just made him sit in the high chair most of it would wind up on the floor.

And if it makes you feel any better, DS is totally off the CDC growth chart now and just went from 2nd to 5th percentile on the WHO. He is seriously tiny.

@skipra: not really! She will suck down a fruit & veggie pouch, but any food she has to pick up & eat is a chore. She feeds the dog half, eats 4 bites, and then plays with the rest. She liked PB&J's a lot for a week, but now she's uninterested. She will eat a ton of goldfish, but she can't live off of those! haha

DS is also a super picky eater and very low percentile. I have no advice because we are still struggling at 16 months but its seems like a pretty clear link between his appetite and weight gain. When he wants to eat more he gains better but he usually just refuses to eat much. Is there something in particular she likes? DS likes carbs so I try to put healthy and fatty things in them. Pancakes with bananas and peanut butter or triple coconut muffins with carrots or other veggies. He goes nuts for the coconut muffins and they really help with the weight gain.

Thanks everyone! You've eased my concerns. She's super active, so that's probably it.

Like others, I think it's normal once they're moving around! As long as she's meeting all other milestones and you're offering food (she's just not eating it) then I wouldn't worry!

We had that happen right at a year old- our pediatrician says she usually sees a huge drop at that point, especially due to walking and being way more active. She went over nutrition with us and gave suggestions for increasing his calories to keep him gaining weight. By his 2 year appointment he was back on the curve again.

We don't have our 1 year appointment until the end of Feb as well and though I haven't weighed LO - he hasn't gone up in clothing size in awhile and he's not really on the big side anyways. Can you email your pediatrician to see if they have any concerns just to put your mind at ease until the appt?

I think it's pretty normal if they are early walkers or super picky eaters. B was always in 35-45th percentile as an infant and dropped to the 10th. He took his first steps at 9.5 months and really took off at 10 months. He was a super picky eater - he did love yogurt and cheese though so that helped out until he started to eat more food.

My LO is huge but she had a big weight drop at her 12 month check up. She's always around the 80th percentile for weight and height. At her 12 month she went down to 25th and 50th...but she still looked like a big girl to me so that was shocking to me. She was back in the 80th percentile by her 18 month check up

We had a big drop in percentiles around 10 months or somewhere close to that! LO was in 50th, then all of a sudden was in the 8 or 9th... We did a weight check and he gained more.... Then he steadily gained, and at our 15 month check recently he was back up in 55th percent!

I think it had to do with moving more, eating more foods and just getting that balance figured out!!

I think they just level off once they start walking and are so active. Can you try more fatty foods? Cheese, avocado, yogurt, peanut butter, etc.

Sadie's always been tall and thin, but has hovered around the 45th percentile for weight her entire first year. She's almost a year now, and she only weighs 18 pounds. That puts her between the 5th and 10th percentile. To me that seems like a pretty big drop. Her 1 year appointment isn't scheduled until the end of February, so I won't be able to talk to her doc until then. I'm worried she's not getting enough to eat, but she's super picky & doesn't have much of an appetite. She throws her food on the floor and refuses to let me feed her.

Is the big drop something to worry about? Anyone else experience this?
