She was estimated to be 8lbs 8oz by her due date, but we induced the day after her due date and she was only 7lbs 10oz. I'm thankful for that!

I didn't get an ultrasound for this reason, but several people on my midwife team felt my baby and tried to estimate her size. Every one of them guessed too big. All of their estimates were in the 7 pound range, and my girl was only 6 pounds 12 ounces.

They estimated 7lbs 13 oz and he came out 7 lbs even. But our radiologist routinely rounded down, so she'd always say the machine estimated xx so subtract half a lb.

Most folks I know had smaller that estimate babies. My boy was bigger.

@wheres_c: @Arden: I was pushing for a while and they thought he was just too big and were giving me a few more pushes before calling csection. I was like, aw hell no and pushed out my big boy. I did need an episiotomy but it was fine.

@Arden: my doctor was giving me that nonsense but in part due to my thyroid issues. I had to have two growth scans in third tri to "make sure the baby wasnt too big to deliver vaginally".

I went to the ultrasounds because I wanted to see the baby and make sure there were no complications but there is no way i would have consented to a c section for that reason. They estimated approx 9lb. He was 6lb 11oz

We had an ultrasound JUST before 3rd trimester so I may be no help but she was measuring I think 4lbs something at the time. The Dr. thought she would be 7-7.5 pounds at the most and said she was a petite baby, not a small baby...whatever that means? She came out 6lbs 9oz.

@arden, that's what I was thinking...that they think the baby is going to be bigger than it really ends up being. I really do wonder if mine will be closer to 7lb and she's just kind of a longer structured baby. My mom is surprised since I was only 6 lb 4 oz, but she smoked while pregnant with me, so uh...yeah. That's a factor :P

Mine was pretty close. At 36 weeks my doc estimated that she was 5'5' and would be about 6 1/2 - 7 lbs when she was born. DD was 6'15".

I hear over estimates way more often than under estimates, with my doula clients.
I constantly hear "The doctor said my baby is going to be 9 or 10 pounds and that I should consider inducing/c-section/episiotomy/whatever", and then the baby comes out 7 pounds.

I think it's really hard to be accurate, so I don't put much stock in weight estimates from anyone.

I know growth scans can be off, but if you had one in the third trimester, did they estimate the baby to be bigger, smaller, or close than he/she was at birth?

At 35 weeks, the tech said my baby was 5 lb 9 oz and the doc estimates about 7.5 lb, maybe 8 at birth. They measured her head and abdomen, but not length since she was too smushed up. She's probably long like me (5'11")!

I know the estimates aren't super accurate, but I couldn't find any statistical data on it.
