@Miss Ariel: omg how awful!

Last winter my newly 3 year old got some kind of stomach bug. Middle of the night diarrhea in his bed. Poop everywhere. He's practically covered head to toe, his night pull up was just a puddle of poop. His blanket, sheet and stuffies all covered with poop. It was like he rolled around in it. Just thinking about it makes me gag.

The next night he woke up a couple times, no poop but I just put him back to bed and ended up sleeping on the floor in his room. Wake up in the morning and he has vomit all over his pillow, dried in his hair. I thought he was just coughing. Didn't even smell it or hear it happen. I felt so bad.

We were potty training my 3-year-old over “quarantine,” and not having a ton of success since he’d poop in his pull-up during nap time but refuse to do it on the potty.

One day Dh went to get him up from his nap while I was on a conference call and I heard him screen upstairs. Apparently his hands were covered in poop. He searched the room to see if he touched anything but couldn’t find anything and was focused on getting him cleaned up.

I went to put Ds to sleep last night and he room still smelled awful. I opened his closet and found he had painted the wall inside and it was covered. And since it was hours later was all hard and crusty. We asked Ds, and he said he was trying to paint an airplane.

From there we stopped wearing pull-ups at nap time and for about the last 2 months haven’t had any accidents! If only we had tried that sooner....

I have a similar story to @Anagram: . We just moved into our house back in April. The house needed some work, including refinishing the bathtubs in the kids' bathrooms. My son's bathroom is weird and has a window in the shower.

Anyways, we had the bathroom refinishers here doing work and then a couple days later showers were ok to use again so we sent my 6 year old to take a shower. A while later DH is walking through the dining room and starts yelling "OH MY GOD". I come running, and there's water POURING from the ceiling, down the light fixture and all over the dining room table. We had a bunch of stuff sitting there and everything is soaked. Water continues to pour off of the big light fixture so DH grabs a giant rubbermaid bucket. We frantically start searching the house to figure out what happend. We check the attic, we check DS's bathroom, and can't find anything. We turn on the tub, but nothing. Then DH gets the idea to turn on the shower. We go back downstairs and I see water gushing down the side of the house. We ran back upstairs and turned off the shower.

Turns out that when the bathtub refinishers replaced the shower head they basically pointed it right at the window. DS didn't think anything of it and is too short to change it, so he showered with it that way. All of the grout around the window had worn away over time and water was pouring down inside the house, as well as going through to the outside.

@Anagram: Oh no!! My kids are the same ages and I let the younger one take a bath with the older one in the room a few months ago. I was on a conference call. The older one came twice and told me the younger one was dumping water onto the floor. Twice I checked and saw nothing so in boy who cried wolf fashion I started ignoring her. By the time she convinced me to check again a few minutes later we had inches of water on the ground in the bathroom. Not my finest parenting moment. I thought to grab our Bissell spot bot thing and sucked up the water pretty quickly (about four tanks worth).

My kids are older (almost 5 and 7), so I frequently let them take a bath or shower alone. And sometimes they combine, like they’ll start with a bath and then also turn the shower on. So just last week, we came home from the beach and it was already past dinner, and the kids were sandy and salty and starving, so I said—go take a shower By yourselves and I’ll start dinner and then come check on you to make sure your hair has been washed/rinsed properly before you get out. And I could hear them kind of splashing a lot, which is normal, but with the curtain closed, it doesn’t ever make a mess. Finally after about 20 full minutes, dinner is made and I realize they still haven’t called me and the shower is still on and I can hear them, playing and having a great time. So I go in to finish them up and make them get out—and the floor is like, LITERALLY under 3 inches of water. The entire bathroom floor. With gross dust bunnies and hair floating around. I don’t mean water is splashed on the floor, I mean it’s a lake.

I FREAKED. And see the shower curtain is completely open at the front hear the shower, and the (detachable) shower head is pointing directly out of the shower, into the rest of the bathroom. Totally shooting 90% of all the water directly out and onto the vsnity,
Mirror, and the storage dresser we have in there, dripping to the floor and making the lake. Al the wooden cabinets are wet, all the hanging towels and hand towels and all the products I have in there, like my hair dryer and hair straightener, which are in a basket on the dresser, etc—all soaked and dripping with water.

😬😩😭😱

They were oblivious. Didn’t know the shower was pointing out, didn’t realize the curtain was open. It took me like 14-15 towels to clean everything up and we had to move the dresser out and wipe everything down and let my hair appliances dry out. I was so afraid we’d get a call that there was a leak downstairs (we live in a condo building).

So yeah,
Never again will I let them start a shower without checking on them at the beginning.

Had to revive this post, a. because it's light-hearted with everything going on now!, and b. because my daughter is taking the cake lately.

Last night I painted her toes and put the polish down to go brush my teeth (kids were done). I come back out of the bathroom to her holding the polish, thinking uh oh, she spilled. Get to her and she purposely painted the carpet and the back of the couch with nail polish! And she's so quick! So now we have a LARGE (12"x6") pink spot on the floor that matches the red spot from some slime last week. Ugh.

A month ago she took a purple washable marker and in less than a minute drew a line all along our bottom cabinets, around the island, and on the wall. And washable marker is not washable if you don't see it for 2 weeks (missed some).

we had a poop smearing incident. he was supposed to be napping... it was awful. we ended up having to get rid of the crib because I couldn't get the smell out of the wood bars. he just took two fistfuls and rubbed it up and down on the bars.

that was the worst. but there have also been lots of broken glasses, a broken mirror, SO much water out of the tub. While potty training my son he went through a phase of trying to clean up his own accidents if I was busy (WHY does he always poop when I'm putting the baby to sleep?!) and that created several big messes including one with so much water in the upstairs bathroom floor that it flooded down to the first floor.

sort of a mess, but my daughter squeezed a sponge out onto my laptop (she was supposed to be cleaning the table, I'm still not sure how it happened "accidentally" but it wasn't worth getting mad about- just very expensive to replace!)

ETA: clearly, my benign neglect method of parenting has some down sides.

We haven’t had anything too bad (knock on all the wood).

My almost 5yo had one yesterday. A friend gave me a pot of shimmer/highlighting powder she didn’t want. I found it in my purse and set it on the dining room table. Right as I was walking out the door with both kids, ds2 in my arms, I heard “uh oh, it was an accident!” I turned around and he had taken the cap off and shook it becuase he didn’t know what it was. Glittery shimmery powder everywhere including my less-than-a-month-old upholstered dining chair. It actually came off fairly easily but it made me cringe when I saw it.

My 18mo isn’t too bad so far. Worst is about 2 months ago I was cleaning the bathroom during his nap and forgot my iced coffee in there (I made my own and it was in an open plastic tumbler). I was in the kitchen and I heard a big crash, ran in thinking the one time I took my eyes off of him and forgot to close the bathroom door he fell and cracked his skull.
Nope. He’s standing at the sink with iced coffee droplets all over his face and hair licking them off saying “yum yum yum” (he happens to love coffee 🙄 which is why he tried to grab it). Droplets of coffee literally everywhere. Right after I cleaned it, no less. I was finding little dried drops in random places for a week.

My mother in law babysits for us 40 hrs/wk and for some reason she left him alone at age 2.5 with blue paint (to go to the bathroom...?). He painted two walls, our curtain, and our couch before she got out.

She tried to scrub it off, but there's still remnants/shadows of it everywhere.

One time during nap time Ds2 figured out the release valve on his radiator would spray water when pressed. I didn't catch him until I went into the room below his to file something and saw water running out of the ceiling and down the wall. His carpet was soaked and a lot of other things within range were damp. It all dried eventually.

The first time my mom babysat my son (who was around 8 months, I think). I came home to find baby food up a kitchen wall, and on the kitchen ceiling. My mom couldn't remember any baby food jars exploding. The kid was not a food flinger, and anyway I don't think he could have thrown it that high. It's still a mystery to me.

Also, rain boots cause a lot of messes around here. Every time I get the kids properly dressed for the weather, it comes back to bite me. Last time, they found a giant puddle and danced in it until DD1 had mud in her hair. The boots were full of water, of course. When they got home, I took off the boots ASAP but didn't catch them going to the bathroom with the wet socks still on, so they tracked the water and mud almost everywhere. And it turned out DD's pants are permanently ruined... the puddle had some exrea special perma-staining mud at the bottom.

My kids are both young, so they are tag teaming the messes (usually while I wash dishes).

Just a week ago, they managed to get my large container of setting powder and spread it ALL throughout the master closet. Powder was hanging in the air and settled onto everything, so everything had to be washed. My younger kid was covered from head to toe and my older one was smacking it between her hands and saying "Poof!"

While my husband was away on a trip, there two consecutive food rage incidents that somehow resulted in chili on all three walls of the dining area, some of it higher than I could reach AND milk everywhere, including the dog.

DD dropped 500 pony beads on the floor while making bracelets with the babysitter. Now whenever I text her to babysit, I promise the beads are securely hidden. :silly:

There have been some messes on my watch. That sort of thing doesn't rile me up (plenty else does!), so I tend to forget them. There was a dry Bisquick incident that DD thought was amazing, she was maybe 2. There was also a poop explosion at the wall during a diaper change when she was 2 weeks old.
