Similar to this one. I agree with review that it probably only lasts to 6 maybe 7 with a tall girl, but we knew that when we got it. Rei will assemble it if you can buy there and they will service it if needed.

Also I bought a real basket on Amazon which sealed the deal

@imadreamer: we got a Specialized hot rock bike with training wheels for our 4 year old when she was under 4 and she loves it and is great at riding it. It's very lightweight. We got the 16 inch size (they are all sizes, down to 12 inch wheels for little kids). It's so Lightweight that my 2 year old can peddle it, even though she can barely tough the peddles with the very top of her toes if she really stretches.

They are pricey, but super popular in my area, so we got a great purple sparkly version for less than half the price on my local buy/sell group.

I want to get my daughter a bike with training wheels for her 4th from a bike shop. We have a balance bike and she doesn't really care for it. I've been looking at various brands, such as Electra, Diamondback and even REI's Co-op cycles. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We had a cheap plastic balance bike that basically got no use. We bought our son a bike with pedals when he turned 3, but it was so heavy he could barely pedal it and he got discouraged. Later we bought a much nicer/lighter 2-wheeler around age 4 and he could ride it by the second time we took him out on it (he's not particularly coordinated). Agree with @SugarplumsMom: the weight of the bike is ultra important.

Our son will be ready for a bigger bike this year and I think our younger DD will be able to ride his old bike, so at least we are getting or money's worth.

I personally am not a fan of balance bikes. I have a friend with a little boy who is the same age as DS1, and he has a balance bike while LO1 has a bike with training wheels. While her LO can ride the balance bike down a hill, he walks it back up the hill. He tried riding LO1's bike with the training wheels, and could not for the life of him figure out how to pedal. Whenever we go to their house, I can see that her LO gets frustrated that he has to walk his balance bike up the hill while my LO rides his all over the place. The training wheels will come off eventually. They're both 4.

Here's a link that really helped me in narrowing down our choices:

http://www.twowheelingtots.com/what-to-look-for-when-purchasing-a-childs-pedal-bike/

The weight of the frame is supposed to be an important factor. We ended up getting an aluminum bike by Puky, a German manufacturer, but if you're in the US, there's a ton of options.

DD's big girl bike is 16" with training wheels. We weren't sure if going that route (with the training wheels) would be a good idea, but we figured she'd enjoy it more. We were right - she loves her bike and I'm really glad we chose one with training wheels. DD is apprehensive of doing things when she gets hurt, it would have been so much more difficult if we introduced a balance bike. I no longer care when she actually learns to ride without them - there'll be a lot of time for that. She's been riding it everyday for the last year (an early 4th bday present) and it feels so good to know it's getting good use.

@PinkElephant: we have a balance bike we got LO when she was 2 and just got her a bike with training wheels when she turned 5. She liked the balance bike but is very cautious so it took a while (and done positive peer pressure from the neighbors) for her to ride more. We have a strider and she is definitely too tall for it now (44" I think). But I think it would be a good option for your 3 y.o.?

The training wheel bike is going well after a slow start. We have started adjusting the wheels so they are higher and she is doing well. She has had it about 2 months and we hope to take the wheels off after another month. It is heavy!

This is the one we got (about $100 for 16")

We have a balance bike and a bike with training wheels. We got the bike at our grocery store of all places. It's teeny, 12 or 18". She loves both. The bike is nice because she can actually ride for a mile + pretty quickly.

We were planning to buy my 3 year old a bike this year and then I read this article: http://www.twowheelingtots.com/specialized-hotrock-12-review/ and it made some good points I hadn't thought about. The pedal bike I was going to buy my son actually weighs more than I do! Probably doesn't apply for your 5 year old but maybe for the 3 year old.

@Maysprout: Was it easy enough to take the pedals off DD's smaller bike? I'm tempted to go that route - I think starting on a balance bike could help DD1, I just don't want to buy something interim for only a few days/weeks of use.

Our daughter's 16" bike we got from a bike shop came with training wheels. But then DH took the pedals off her old smaller bike and turned it into a balance bike bc he decided it was time for her training wheels to come off. He gave her 2 days on the balance bike and then tried out on her real bike and she was able to do her big girl bike then without training wheels.

Our 3 year old hates pedaling so we got her a balance bike since she was still too small for the other one. She's done great on it.

In researching bikes for my girls, I see lots of people talking about balance bikes, but not so much about small bikes with training wheels that eventually convert to a two wheeler. Are bikes with training wheels just not a done thing anymore?

I'd like to get bikes for my DDs who are turning 5 and 3 late this spring. The 5 year old isn't particularly coordinated (she struggles with peddling her tricycle), but I think that it's a bit silly to buy a balance bike at her age. The three year old is significantly more in control of her body, but I'm not sure how big of a rider she's going to be, so I was hoping to start with something cheap and cheerful.

If you've got mid priced kids' bikes to recommend, I'd love to hear it! Thanks!
