Around 8 or 10 my friends and I were allowed to bike/walk about a mile or two to a nearby Walgreens to spend our allowances on goodies like nail polish, candy, and Clearly Canadian (remember that stuff) - no one batted an eyelash!

I think my brother and I were allowed to ride our bikes to the park and around the neighborhood at 8 &10. There were two of us so the buddy system allowed more freedom than just one of us on our own. In our neighborhood a pack of boys aged 5-10 rides around a four block area.

I think riding your bike around playing/exploring is different than riding it to school. I would not let my elementary or middle school kids ride to school. Traffic that surrounds our local schools at pick up and drop off is a nightmare. Cars just aren't looking for bikes. If we stay in our current house my kids will be walking to school very early on.

We lived in a townhome community and rode our bikes out around by ourselves in elementary school... we weren't ever allowed to leave the complex though.

We were never allowed to bike around town (too much traffic), but we biked around our neighborhood regularly when we were 7 and 9 (when we first got bikes).

I remember being in second grade and riding my bike a few miles to a friends' house by myself for a play date. It was SUPER HOT, too....in the desert of west texas.

Generally, I was with my brother and the two of us were roaming all over the neighborhood (very, very desolate and rural neighborhood) by ourselves pretty much as soon as I could ride a bike. We trespassed on so many oil fields and even climbed a ladder up a pumpjack once.

True story

We lived in a hilly isolated neighborhood but had a park across the street so we had no desire/need to go very far!

I never was. We didn't live in an area conducive to it. SO many hills!

I was never allowed to bike around town alone. The most I could do was ride my bike up and down the sidewalk, but not across a street. I so badly wanted to ride my bike around the block, but I wasn't allowed to unless my 6 years younger than me brother came too.

My parents were very protective, I have no memories of being allowed to play outside and have my run of the neighborhood...I don't connect with those child of the 70s-80s memes at all.

I was really young, like maybe 7. I remember I hit a tree pretty hard and tried to hide it from my mom. I also walked to school by myself when I was 6, I can't imagine doing that now.

My son's walk to school is about 10 minutes, and I'd love to be able to send him on his own on his bike at some point! I wouldn't feel comfortable with him and his sister biking around in city traffic though, until they were older and had better judgment.

I started biking around town with my brother (with no chaperones) at a pretty young age. We were maybe 9 or so? We'd bike to the local shopping center and go to the library or the secondhand book store. Some of the best memories of my life!

My biggest concern with kids biking by themselves is actually traffic. I grew up with an area with a lot of walking and biking trails, so I was rarely in traffic.

When did you start being allowed to use your bike around town by yourself?
