I think I am going to go the trailer route. I am an avid rider, but still fairly clumsy so I would prefer my baby be closer to the ground. :)

Hope this isn't changing the subject too much, but how old does a baby have to be before you can put them on the bike with you?

I asked for a bike for my birthday this year so we could all go on family rides. I'd feel pretty comfortable if DH had her. He is a super pro bike rider on the street. I, on the other hand, can't remember the last time I rode a bike lol. Maybe after some practice.

PS - J looked sooo cute in his little helmet!

I take my daughter all over Portland in our burly trailer. It's a really safe city to bike in, so I feel pretty comfortable.

My brother works for a bike shop and strongly suggested a trailer for DS over a front or rear mounted seat (he says, research shows that baby is less likely to an injury in a trailer than on a bike if you crash). I'm still nervous about it and haven't bought either just yet. We have a great bike path behind our house.

@Mrs. Pen: not yet but that will be next on my list. But that I will buy new; I don't do old head or feet gear from people I don't know.

@regberadaisy: yay! Glad you found one :) did you find a helmet too?

@Foodnerd81: unfortunately no. I'd try to keep to sidewalks if possible, otherwise shoulders. And never on highways...

Our metro- Minneapolis- was rated the top bike friendly city because of all the bike lanes! But we're in a suburb.

I am not a fluent bike-rider. I can ride, but I don't do it often and hardly ever street ride. My husband rides his bike every day and used to commute across town on his bike. He also takes long rides with the dog, so I know he's capable of being aware of himself and another living creature. I wouldn't ride with our son in the street, but I'd feel comfortable with my husband doing so. In fact, we're dying for him to get older so he can fit in the seat that attaches to the front of the bike.

Since we live near the largest park in our borough, I am totally comfortable with DH or I biking in the park with LO. But I refuse to bike with LO to the park, we will walk the bikes for the 5-minute walk and then ride in the park. DH rides a lot, so he is comfortable riding in the streets, but I refuse to have him do that with LO on the back.

I am barely comfortable with street biking, in a bike lane, by myself, so I wouldn't be comfortable with a LO on the bike with me. But I just get nervous with biking in general (I had a bad fall when i was little-- unrelated to traffic just left me nervous). Do you have bike lanes? It would really depend on the traffic if I'd be OK with it in general.

I was nervous at first to have him on the bike with me, but turns out I don't notice the extra weight at all and no issues with balance. We both really enjoy it!

But so far we've only biked the trail behind our apt which is just a boring .5 mile loop, so we have to do several laps... I'd like to bike more places but that involves either biking on the shoulder, sidewalks or busy streets. I'm really nervous about it! I want to bike to the gym with him but it's 2.5 miles of street biking.

What would you feel comfortable with?
