Tried it once. Absolutely hated it. Horrible. I prefer regular yoga.

I think it all depends on the person. I tried Bikram and was not a fan while I love normal yoga. The studio I want to was way to serious while I feel the other yoga types are more welcoming and all about modifying the poses and doing what you can do.

@Freckles: Ooh I totally missed the "leave" part of your post and thought you meant that they just frowned upon taking a break. I was like, Whaaat?! You're totally right though, the studio I went to asked people to stay in the room unless they really weren't feeling well. We did have people leave occasionally though and the teachers didn't seem to miss a beat.

You can start as a newbie, they are used to it. For many people, Bikram is their first foray into yoga. Just don't go in a large t-shirt and sweatpants! You'll want to wear as little clothing as possible (that you are comfortable with).

What @Freckles: said is true. They will ask you to sit in the room on your mat if you are feeling like you need to run out. I stopped doing Bikram for many reasons, including time, but also because of teachers. But I have a couple of friends who are great teachers, so try it out and see!

@PermaStudent: People can take breaks with child's pose, but not leave the room because they can't take the heat. This one guy fainted in a class!! I think it really depends on the studio.

@Freckles: Wow, that's crazy! I've been to a few different studios around here, including a Bikram specific one, and they have always, always encouraged taking a break when needed. I mean, in a hot yoga class, sometimes it's that or pass out! There is no way I'd go back to a studio if they looked down on people for pausing for a moment.

@Mamaof2: I started with "warm" yoga first, to ease into it, and then tried a hot yoga session. I looooved warm yoga, but couldn't handle the temperature of the regular hot class! It's not for everyone. I say go in with an open mind, talk to the instructor before class starts to let them know that it is your first time, and try to have fun with it! :)

I love Bikram. It's probably the only work out where I actually feel better afterwards. That being said, the first class I ever took suuuucked. But that's only because I had no idea what to expect and I'm not used to be in a room that's 105 degrees with what felt like a million percent humidity.

My advice to you is this:

- Yes, it will be hard the first time and the heat probably will get to you. That's ok. You can take breaks (meaning sit/lay down) when needed. You'll see even the most experienced yogis needing to sit a posture out.

- You can modify the postures so that you can do them and still get all of the benefits. The more you go, the better you'll do.

-Bring lots of water!!! And wear as little of clothing as you feel comfortable with. And it helps if it's moisture wicking.

- Also, go to at least 2 or 3 classes before you decide whether or not to stick it out.

I also wish I could keep up with it but it was a large time commitment for me and definitely can be pricey.

If it's a true Bikram yoga studio, just be aware that they can be quite tyrannical. The studios i've been to strongly frowns upon those who leave to take a break if they can't take the heat. That being said, it suited my masochistic self so i really enjoyed it. It's very hot though (104 degrees F @ 40% humidity) and they do the full 90 minutes.

I really enjoyed my first class. I think it's okay if you never did yoga since it's more about going through a sequence, and not a crazy fast flow class.

Bikram was my first yoga class and I loved it!!! I'm not super athletic, but I am flexible. And I also tolerate heat well. It does get sweltering hot...like I usually don't sweat much and I was drenched after the class.

Wish I could keep up with it, but it's $$ around here :(

I have never taken any type of yoga class but a Bikram studio opened near me and I am intrigued and want to try it.

The website says newbies are welcome but wondering if its going to be way out of my league and I will be so lost!!! (and dying from the heat)

Can you just start with Bikram or should I start with regular yoga 1st?
