 I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I am dreading what bills are going to be coming after my m/c. One thing that has helped us it that my OB was strategic with his diagnostic codes to keep the insurance from kicking it back to us. Any chance the OB/hospital will work with you? 3gs is a lot of dough.

@agold: Your out of network ER shouldn't be charged as out of network. When you have an emergency, that's usually paid at an in-network rate. I feel like it's worth fighting for, but I completely understand why you wouldn't want to. I've unfortunately had 4 miscarriages, 2 which required surgery, and it was so painful seeing those bills for what should have been live births, but instead were for missed miscarriages.

I'm so sorry, it does suck! There's some things that should just be completely covered. :(

Yes my 2 miscarriages were expensive and all I had was monitoring and betas. I'm sorry. It literally adds insult to injury.

@littlejoy: My sister paid over $6K to deliver a baby at the same hospital I did, and I paid $0. We have the same pediatrician for our girls and a hospital visit for stitches for my niece cost close to $1300 when it was all done, and it would have cost me $50 total. So I'm jealous of a lot of her PPO benefits, but when it comes down to it, I just can't justify moving out of my HMO at this point despite the things I don't like about it.

We actually have really good insurance through Aetna. We pay around $100 a month for a family of three. My max OOP is $2,400 so I have met that but one of the ER visits was out of network hence the $3,000 total.

I can't really complain about our insurance, just the cost of medical care in general. My laparoscopic surgery was $30,000 and I was in and out within 5 hours. I had a c-section with my daughter and spent 2 nights in the hospital and that was $35,000. Just crazy to me!

@agold: That's a really good point!! We are with a PPO, which probably explains our experience.

@mrskansas: I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Do you have a PPO or something similar? I have really been wanting to get into a PPO so I can have free selection of doctors, but the bills I know I would receive are just more than I want to budget for. I have an HMO where my doctor choice is limited, but I really never pay more than $10 or $40 for anything. I hope you can find a better insurance coverage that helps you out!

I am so, so sorry. Our insurance said pregnancy loss was covered 100%, but when I had multiple appointments and tests done to track my loss, they said the specific procedure covered was only a d&c (which I didn't need). Everything else would be subject to my deductible.

I just found out my new provider doesn't cover any ultrasounds during pregnancy ... Insurance SUCKS.

I totally understand the feeling of wanting to get it over with (therefore not protesting it). I do think it's worth calling the hospital to setup a payment plan (if needed). They don't count against your credit, and usually do not have any associated interest fees.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. My 1 m/c cost me more than my two csections (out of pocket) combined. It's not fair and it definitely sucks.

I'm so sorry. I've had to deal with that twice now. And I'm not sure why it was more expensive the second time when I wasn't even in the hospital overnight. But I'd rather just pay the bills and never see them again than try to put up a big stink :(

I'm so sorry! I know that medical bills suck. We are preparing to give birth in may and have had to put aside money for that. We know we are going to have to pay $5500 out of pocket.
I'm sure it is even worse going through the loss and getting the reminder every time you see a new bill.

So in an unfortunate series of events October-December I had an ectopic that was resolved with surgery and then a natural miscarriage. I finally got around to adding up all the bills from this and between the 20+ beta tests, surgery, the trip to the ER and all the office visits my total is over $3,000.That's what I have to pay out of pocket! I don't even want to know the amount that insurance has paid.
We have great insurance but I just can't believe the cost of health care. Not only is this putting a dent in our bank account, it's like a kick in the teeth every time I get a new bill.

I'm not sure what I'm looking to get out of posting this, but ugh! It sucks.
