We will have a baby naming ceremony (Jewish tradition) so that is when we will explain the names and where they came from. The birth announcement will likely be just the regular info + picture.

@Corduroy: my friend put an explanation of her sons name in her christmas newsletter- it's more of a nickname but is his official name and I feel like she got a lot of questions about it.

I like the idea of explaining the name and where it came from, but I still want a baby picture in an announcement. But I do agree that the name info is more interesting the how many ounces and inches and the exact minute she was born. (All info I included in our birth announcements :silly: )

However I felt like I needed to meet my LO before making the name official so I still wouldn't have ordered until after she was born.

I think the announcement is really cute with the picture. I struggled with finding a place to explain DDs middle name on her birth announcement. I ended up doing it on Facebook. We still got a lot of questions about it. I'd like to do something like this if we pic an "out there" name for LO2.

@blackbird: I agree! If you're going to send me a birth announcement, it better have a picture of the baby! :D

I have a bunch of family not on Facebook, so for many of them, the birth announcement was the first pictures of my kids that they saw.

Joni Lay of LayBabyLay.com made the cutest name announcements for her little girls. Their names were explained and people were able to learn the correct spellings. She placed the announcement on her newborn and sent the pic out to friends and family.

Did you do anything similar?

I like this a wee bit more than the standard date/time/pounds/inches because it can be made ahead of time. By the time "birth" announcements are sent everyone already knows you had a baby and probably have already seen a photo.
