I really like the tradition of them and as much as I love social media, I kind of hate that Facebook has stolen the thunder a little bit! When we have a LO, I think we'll probably send birth announcements to the majority of our "Christmas card list," which we have never really used for Christmas cards but is basically an evolved version of our wedding guest list. I was worried about appearing to be fishing for gifts as well. My mom did send a couple to friends of hers I don't know, but she sent a note with the announcement saying she just wanted to show off her grandbaby, blah blah blah. But for me most people had already given gifts so I assumed they knew not to send another one. Personally I don't always send a gift if I get a birth announcement. We had to place a second order because we ran out of the first thinking we didn't have anyone we wanted to send it to.
