Ours was a combination Christmas card & birth announcement. We sent about 100. If I had a baby not during Christmas time, I think I would send to the same list.

For our Christmas cards, I have always chosen a picture we haven't posted on Facebook to kind of make it "special." I would do that for a birth announcement.

What others said: same as our Christmas Card list (minus some friends who wouldn't care). So that was parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, and a few close friends.

We had late Nov babies so both times our herb announcement was also our Christmas card so it went to our whole card list (around 70 people). I think we would have sent it to the same list even if it was a separate card at a different time of year.

We sent them out to our Christmas card list which includes all aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. We send out about 75-100 Christmas cards! This year, it was a joint announcement/Christmas card and we sent out 125

Our situation was similar with far flung family (3 continents). We sent announcements to all extended family members aunts/uncles/grandparents but not cousins (most of whom are online). We also sent to a few family friends, in addition to a select group of our own friends.

I did not send an announcement out (although I did post something to Facebook). But I think if you were going to send them to some aunts and uncles, you should send them to all aunts and uncles.

Skipped them, just did email/FB. Pretty much all our relatives are on FB though. If I had done them I would have just sent them to VIP relatives. Our Christmas card sort of wound up de facto doubling as a birth announcement since LO was all over it obviously for the first time.

Ummm I was that first time mom who assumed everyone wanted to see my beautiful new child. I think we sent 70-80? We've narrowed down to people who I think will care but will prob send 50-60 for the new baby. Same as our Christmas card list.

Maybe I'm picky but I only sent it to friends and family that we thought would care. I have a very large family I know not all of them would care about having a birth announcement because they would hear it through the family grape vine. We sent it to friends that we really like that our age. I should note that I'm not a big facebook user ... meaning pretty much not at all. We sent out about 50 or so.

We sent to all our aunts and uncles (many...like you!), but only to my cousins and not to DH's. I'm much closer to mine than he is to his and we had to draw the line somewhere.

This may not be the right board, but whatever. :)

First off, my husband and I are long distance from our entire families, and both of our families are pretty large.

We are planning on doing birth announcements mainly for my husband's extended family, none of whom are on Facebook or even really online (no email). Then I figured we should also do my few extended family members that aren't online... which then spiraled into ALL of the extended family members in the generation above me (aunts and uncles) because I didn't want some people to get them and some people not and therefore cause some kind of offense. In total, between his and my extended family (of the older, not-online generation) it's about 50 birth announcements.

However I want to draw the line at including extended family members of my generation, mainly my cousins. I have over 30 cousins and I really don't think that any of them care about getting a little postcard with baby pictures to put up on their fridge. Between the cost of the announcements, the postage, the organizing, and the paper usage..... it's just.... eh.

What do you think? What did you decide?
