Before insurance, my birthing center was charging $4,200. After my insurance, our out of pocket expense is $940. (that is including our deductible). If we opt for the birthing tub, they charge an additional $170. Our insurance doesn't cover that expense.

The midwife practice I went to accepted my (crappy) insurance and charged the exact same rate as the OB practice I was originally going to. It really depends on your insurance but my cost was $3500 no matter the provider. (Hospital costs added a lot more onto that...had I chosen the birth center it would have been much less expensive.)

The birth center I go to accepts some insurance but we didn't have any so we paid just over $4000 for or package after tax. That was the most expensive one, this time we are getting the one right below it.

I just re-read your question though, and most birth centers accept insurance, even medicaid. Just check yours, they'll also likely have that on their website.

I believe the national average is about $5,000 for a full birth center package (pre-natel care, birth, post-natel care) if you don't have insurance. You can check websites for centers in your area though to get more detailed information - many website provide fee schedules.

My husband and I will being TTC, starting in December. My open enrollment period for work is this week and I'm trying to figure out how much money to set aside in my health savings account. If I conceive easily and have a low risk pregnancy, I'd rather have a midwife/ birth center birth. How much does this cost? Does insurance cover anything? Is a birth center birth a qualified expense for a heath savings account? Thanks!
