Ours wasn't fancy, but the biggest benefit was going to the hospital every week, hearing how they do things (and knowing where we would/wouldn't differ), meeting the nurses, touring the labor and delivery ward. Mainly just getting comfortable there.

i didn't take any classes, i just didn't have the time for the main reason. i read up on things to prepare for, and watched a few videos online. i know you can't plan for every situation, but i was planning on getting an epidural, which pretty much took care of pain management, and the dr and nurses walked/talked me through breathing and pushing. if you plan on doing a no medication delivery, i can see how the classes can help with breathing techniques and pain management.

We took an 8-hour "crash course" and I'm glad we did. While I knew a lot of the info, we learned some different breathing and relaxation techniques and more about our hospital's policies on different things. And DH learned a LOT. It was only $60 and I think it was well spent, we'll see how much we retained though when the big day comes!

i didn't take any classes and i didn't regret it. the class was like $450 for one day and i don't think anything could have prepared me for delivery (not in a bad way, you just don't know what it will be like until you are there). so i'm glad i saved the money!

I was really happy that we did the hospital classes. Like the other posters have mentioned, I felt confident going into the classes, but DH wasn't as informed. It really helped "us" prepare for the birth.

We're doing three separate classes (labor and delivery, breastfeeding, bringing home baby), and while not every part of every class has been great, DH and I went together and they made us have great conversations afterwards (and during). When I thought about not doing them, it occurred to me that I have done a lot more reading than he has, and I have HB (thanks, guys!), and that he really had no clue what he's getting into. So in some ways, I signed up so that he could learn more, and it's been great for that!!

We did a 6-hour course at the hospital we delivered at. I thought it was worth it even if we totally didn't pay attention to the c-section part and I ended up with a section. LOL!

We took a weekend intensive taught by our doula andf I REALLY enjoyed it. I felt very empowered and educated when we finished. I agree with @ktdid23 it was a super fun way to bond with DH over my pregnancy and our upcoming delivery too. He wasn't so much into the reading and stuff, so he took A LOT away from the classes and was really happy we did them.

We did a 6 week class at our hospital and while I'm not sure we retained a lot of information, it was a really great bonding experience for my husband and I. We giggled through class like teenagers and had an ice cream date after every class. We were really glad we did them.

We weren't sure about a class, but took an online version they offered to us that was interactive and they mailed us a paper booklet of all the information we needed and that was covered in the class. We also had a scheduled tour of the hospital but LO came early so we never got a tour.

I was happy with the information in the class and I know DH was super happy to be able to learn it all at home.

@Rubies: Thanks! I know some people don't feel like classes are necessary, but honestly I'm pretty clueless so we're considering doing the whole 6-week one!

My hospital offered a two-weekend crash course, which my husband and I took and found very, very helpful! We learned a lot, met other couples, and had a lot of fun!

Has anyone taken a labor and delivery class at the hospital where they delivered? What was it like? Was it worth it? We have quite a few choices - from a one-session general class to an in-depth 6-week course on labor and delivery, newborn care, and breastfeeding. I'm just wondering if anyone has taken something similar. Thanks!
