@chopsuey119: well I guess you were lucky. Because 2 friends of mine who were EBF got pregnant when their LO was 4 months. Depends on the body maybe?

@Mrs. Sunglasses: I actually learned that it is (if nursing around the clock exclusively) and as long as baby isn't being supplemented and eating solids.. proved true in my case!

If you definitely DO NOT want another pregnancy anytime soon, then yeah, taking the pill or getting on some from of contraceptive is a must. DH and I were open to having another baby at any time so we just went au naturel. :D

I would like to avoid going back on hormonal birth control. I was hoping to chart to avoid after our LO comes. I'm just not sure how long it generally takes for your cycles to become regular enough for this to be reliable.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: yes, many people have gotten pregnant bc they thought EBF was good enough. Every doctor (my OB, my primary care doc and our pediatrician) really emphasized that EBF was not an effective form of birth control. My friend got pregnant with twins while she was EBF her 8 month old...of course she loves her babies and wouldn't change anything but she made sure to not to assume BF was good enough the second time around

I saw my doc today and will get Mirena. I just didn't want to take the pill because #1 when you breastfeed you need to make sure you take it at the same time everyday for it to be effective #2 I was fed up of the weight gain and didn't want to go that route this time again.

@chopsuey119: um... EBF is NOT a method of contraception. Even if you don't have your period I know WAY TOO many people who got pregnant thinking they were safe.

Sorry... I just don't want anyone to get pregnant thinking they were safe. :|

I struggled with this too. A surprise baby is not in the cads for us right ow, and I'm terrible at remembering to take my pill, so I opted for mirena. No supply issues, and no babies either!

@lydg: This topic was discussed in my prenatal class, then at the 2 week check-up my doc said to think about what I want to do by my 2 month check up. I was 'for sure' going to go on the mini-pill. But now that I have LO, I have second-guessed that because I don't want to give him artificial hormones through my milk. LO is 3 months old and I am EBF, but we still are very careful in other ways. If I did get pregnant, even though it is not our plan, we would be so happy.

I'm planning on getting Mirena. I could barely remember to take a pill before we started trying, I can't imagine remembering with a baby, and we definitely don't want another baby anytime soon. I want something as foolproof as possible!

My OB asked me today at my 6 week pp appointment if I wanted birth control and I said no. I am producing just enough milk to feed M, I don't need to worry about my supply dropping. We will use condoms for now as our bc. Also, it is laughable that we would have sex anytime soon. We're both so tired all the time and our lo is still in our room. We'll see. For now though, it would be condoms. Once I'm no longer breastfeeding, I'll go back to the patch.

My OB talked to me about it at my 6 week pp check up. The mini pill is a popular one, but I decided against BC since I was exclusively nursing.

EBF can act as a natural form of BC, but once babies start sleeping through the night and eating solids it's not as effective.
I got my period back at 7 months pp and got pregnant again right after LO's 1st birthday.. I was still nursing too!

They did not talk about birth control at all with me at the hospital. Intercourse is off limits for 6 weeks anyway, at least that is what the doctor's tell you. I had a 1 week follow up for my c-section and asked the nurse practitioner about birth control and she kind of chuckled. She said most people don't ask that early and that I'll need to talk with my doctor about it at my 6 week follow up appointment. I then asked how long I would bleed post delivery and she said it could be up to 7 or 8 weeks, which I was surprised to hear. We used condoms for 2 years prior to TTC (I just wanted to be off the pill) so we'll use that short-term until I either go back on the pill or get an IUD. We want to do something temporary for the next couple of years. Once we know we are 100% done, DH will get a snip-snip.

I am trying to start thinking about this now that my head is semi-clear...because I am sure when LO gets here I will be all cloudy! Did you change your method of birth control after LO? Most friends have told me they ask you in the hospital what you want to do.

We weren't using anything (pretty obv) when I got PG, but I had been off the pill for three months after being on it for 10+ years. I am not digging the idea of going back on it because coming off it was so rough for me, mainly emotionally. But, the idea of having another baby, pretty sure we are not ready for that either!
