@gotkimchi: I honestly don't remember, but maybe one full cycle? It wasn't immediate, but wasn't longer than a month I think.

@gotkimchi: I got the Mirena remove and am taking Kariva (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol and ethinyl estradiol tablets). It's been sooooooo much better!!! My sex drive is definitely up and my sensitivity is back! Both my husband and I are much happier! I have my period again, but it's very light on this pill.

@birdofafeather: exactly everything you said.

I was on several different birth control pills over 8 years and I didn't realized how awful they made me feel until I stopped taking them. I haven't taken anything in almost 5 years since TTC my first, just charting for a few months here and there because luckily breastfeeding kept my periods away for almost a year each time. I'm pregnant with my third and after this, DH is getting snipped.

When I first went on BC, I was on Depo-Provera and it was fine for me (but I was also like 18...). Went off it after a couple years because they were saying it was potentially harmful if taken long-term and tried the pill for a few months, but I'm horrible at taking pills so I switched to NuvaRing. Ugh. I had horrible PMS and it totally killed my libido. I haven't been on BC since 2009 and I still have a very low sex drive, it never really recovered. DH and I are both on board with me not messing with my system any further, so it's condoms for us.

after coming off BCP after 10 years of being on it, i knew i was never going back on. it's condoms, NFP and abstaining for us until we have another and after that, DH told me he's getting snipped. hormonal BC was really bad for me emotionally and even though my skin was amazing on it, the downsides, like low libido, were too much. and i didn't know it was an issue until i got off of them.

If I were you I would try going without anything for a few months and see how you feel then (using condoms of course). Otherwise I feel like you won't know what is your "normal" and what is the pills. But I know I dislike comdoms too.

Previously when I was on the pill I liked yaz, which then had all kinds of warnings about blood clots- could that be the one you used to take? When they switched it to a generic o felt all crazy and just never really liked the pill again.

@smocks: Thanks! I did tri-phasic pills for so long, I kind of forgot there were other options. I wonder if maybe one of the same-dose pills would be better for me. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just thought I'd throw out my anecdotal experience with BC.

First time I started HBC, I was 16 and tried the tri-phasic pills. They made me INSANE. Like - hormonal crying, acting crazy, etc for the 2 months I was on them. May have had to do somewhat with my age but I hated them. Plus I had some breakthrough bleeding.

I've been on a same-dose pill since then (when not TTC/pregnant/BFing) - currently Mononessa, I've used Sprintec, maybe another type but they're all basically the same, just different generic names. 3 weeks of the same dosage, 1 week of the placebo where you get your period. I've never had an issue with libido on any of these though. In case you were looking for other HBC options.

@Adira: I'm taking what I believe is a generic version of Ortho called Tri-Sprintec --- i was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for YEARS though, and I was always fine with a tri-phasic pill.

So far, yes, it's fine. I've only been on it one month though, I just finished nursing & got my period back and started it right away... I haven't been on the pill since about 2007!

I have skyla, which is the lower hormone version of the mirena, and I'll say that I have a lot of the same side effects that I did on Mirena. It's not a deal breaker for me though, the pros still outweigh the cons. Just letting you know even with less hormones, I suspect you'll have the same problems. I was on yaz prior to kids and really liked that.

Otherwise I agree with others that you should go hormone free for a while and figure out what your normal is.

I would guess based on your past experiences that anything hormonal would have the same problem. I know it's annoying to have to track things carefully, but what about NFP + condoms? We did this for awhile and once I was sure I had ovulated, we had about a two week period every month where we didn't need to worry about condoms (which my DH doesn't like either). Hah, eventually maybe they'll be effective male hormonal birth control (short of getting snipped!)

Before we had babies, and I was on birth control, I took Seasonale/Seasonique for years. I didn't notice a decline in sex drive (though mine is naturally lower than DH already). I really liked that it was a 3 month pill so, so only 4 periods a year. It really controlled my menstrual issues (cramping, moodiness, and heavy periods). I've been fairly unhappy with things since my tubal ligation two years ago and have debated asking my OB about putting me back on birth control for all of my menstrual miserableness.
