I had a Mirena after #1 and spotted and cramped terribly for the first three months. I was about to make an appt to have it removed when all that stopped. I loved it after that. No periods, no thinking about BC. I got pregnant my 2nd cycle after removal. I do think it negatively impacted sex drive though.

I have a Skyla now, after #2. Insertion was so much better, the spotting and cramping were over much quicker and now that I have mostly weaned, my sex drive is back in full force. It's made by the same company as Mirena, but only lasts for three years. DH is supposed to get a vasectomy, but he's really nervous about it. If I run out of time, I'd opt for another Skyla over the Mirena.

@babypugs: That's how I feel about taking BC like it's going to mess with my body and I don't like that at all.

I love hearing all your different types of bc ladies! It seems like the grand majority has mirena. Many pros and some cons but that's with anything in life lol

I said to DH for now I think I'm gonna do the pill for a year or two and if after that we still feel like as complete as we do now, he can go get a snip. I personally hate condoms but also hate the thought of nothing being in sync with my body.

We've done natural family planning for over 10 years. I've only gotten pregnant when trying ... I HATED hormonal birth control (it makes me psychotic), but after this baby is born, we are absolutely done having kids. I appreciate this thread ... between the birth and DH being cleared after an eventual vasectomy, we'll need something.

@snowjewelz: There's a new episode of The Longest Shortest Time (podcast) about a woman who got pregnant on the Mini Pill ... she didn't know for 30 weeks!!

I had a mirena inserted about 8 weeks after having LO2. We're pretty certain we're done but wanted to take awhile longer to be sure before taking permanent measures. So far, I honestly have not loved the mirena, although I've only had it in for a little less than 4 months and my doctors (OB and PCP) both said to give it more time. With my first LO, I didn't get a period back until 11 months post-partum and that was so nice. But with this LO, I had 5 weeks of bleeding after the mirena insertion (which was only a few weeks after lochia had stopped), and since then, I have spotting at least 1-2x per week plus I have had PMS symptoms that seem to just come at arbitrary times and hang out for like 4 days before disappearing. I *think* I may have actually gotten a period once already, although it was so light, I couldn't really tell the difference from the spotting. Anyway, my PCP said to give it 9 full months before making a decision and since I'm halfway there, I'm keeping it for now. But I was definitely hoping to avoid not only periods but also my horrible PMS, and so far, I feel like I have gotten more PMS than without birth control.

@snowjewelz: I like it. My dr. did say to be SUPER careful about taking it the same time everyday, within minutes. I just set an alarm and take it before I leave for work. I used it after DS was born for 14 months.
We actually use condoms as back up just to make sure there are no surprises. A 3rd would not be good right now. ;)

@josina: how are you liking the mini pill?

I thought long and hard about this and in the end we sucked it up and decided to just do condoms. After I wean (end of this year hopefully), I will probably go back on normal birth control that I was on before DD1. Nervous about mini pill b/c it seems like a lot of people have gotten pregnant on it? No comfortable with any IUDs either.

We are using condoms until we're ready for the big vasectomy after DD2's first birthday. I thought it was going to be awful, but I didn't want BC pills messing with my body and hated the Mirena. Honestly, I don't mind the condoms at all! I think they have improved since we last used them 10 years ago haha.

I am currently on the mini-pill while breastfeeding. We have 2 and DH wants to be done, while I'm open to a 3rd, so we won't be doing anything permanent for at least 2 years.
I will get back on the nuvaring once I quit breastfeeding, I've used that since 19 and love it.

We are in the same spot about a third. I'm pretty sure we are all done with 2 but I'm only 28 so I didn't want to do anything permanent. I got Mirena after dd1 and had it in for 2 years. We were able to get pregnant right away after having it removed! I got another one after dd2. It's been great- I'm breastfeeding so I haven't had my period!

I had the mirena until I removed it recently to TTC #2. I loved it when I had it, no periods (though I'm still nursing so that might have helped), no thinking about BC. However when I got it removed I realized it was definitely negatively impacting my drive.

I think after we have another baby I will try the copper IUD which doesn't have hormones. I have heard it can make your period bad but I am willing to try it in exchange for no hormones / no daily birth control. I never had a problem with hormonal birth control before but at this stage in my life it's hard enough to keep my sex life going, I can't have something artificial suppressing it too.

I had really mixed feelings about my mirena. i was glad to have it, but i was cramping for a few months after insertion, never stoped having random spotting even through i wasn't ovulating and ended up getting cysts. I think it effected my emotions and sex drive but it's hard to know for sure. vI was super relieved to get it out and wont be getting another even though people tell me it's different after kids.... right now we are being careful until i can start charting again. But it's not the best plan because we were doing a bad job of being careful and that's when LO2 happened.

I had a Mirena for 3 years before TTC LO. We got pregnant our second month trying. I had another placed around 12 weeks pp. I had it removed in August so we could start TTC #2. We still haven't had a bfp after 10 cycles, but my cycles were regular right away and I am ovulating so I think it has more to do with life stress, my age, etc. I will probably get another at some point unless my OB thinks something else would be better. I had some sporting at first that was annoying, but eventually my periods just go away completely and I like that!!

Mirena as well. I like it. I've had it about 2 years now. My periods are super light, maybe need a pantiliner for a day only. They used to be super debilitating with severe cramps and heavy flow, so I'm really happy with it.

I have Mirena and I like it. I got it after my 2nd was born, when we were pretty sure we were done but not ready to take permanent measures. But i was at a point where if something went wrong with it and it did make it harder to have another, I was ok with that. (And now almost a year and a half in to having two kids I feel quite certain that two is perfect for us).

I haven't had what I would call a real period yet, but I have some spotting about once a month. Like a day or two of pantyliners. But I'm still breastfeeding and didn't get my period back until I weaned with my first, so I don't know what's mirena and what's breastfeeding. I love not having to think about it. Like @SweetCaroline: I wonder how it affects my drive, but I think that's also tied up with nursing and lack of sleep and being exhausted after dealing with two little ones all day.

I hated the pill before TTC our first so that just wasn't an option I would consider.

I've had the second one since 8 weeks postpartum and have spotting for 4 days a month, only enough for a pantiliner. I wonder how it affects my sex drive, but no other complaints.

We are confident that we are done having babies, so I have the Mirena IUD. I'd say it is fine, although I was hoping to not have a period by now (it was inserted @7 months ago.) The spotting mid cycle has stopped, but my last period lasted an entire week (at least it was light).

Today I went for my 4 week pp appt. and we started talking about birth control. DH and I are 90% sure that DS and DD are more than enough for us and we feel complete. However, I am not comfortable with tying my tubes because I'm still so young and who knows what can happen in life.

I have had two friends who were on Mirena and it took them over a year to get pregnant after coming off it. So when my doctor brought it up today at the appt I was a little hesitant due to other experiences. Given, I might not ever want to have a third but if I do, I don't want to have a long delay.

For now we agreed that I would do the pill ( believe it was a specific type because he did say it might stop my period) I am breastfeeding so he said this would be okay to take.

I am just curious what others have. I haven't been on bc since I was a teenager and that was to regulate my period. Other than that I was just always very careful. '

And if you have Mirena...what are your thoughts?
