Since you wrote in point 4 that you would like to use water to help relieve pain, I think you need to be more specific...do you want a birthing suite with a shower or a tub...if your birthing location doesn't have them in all suites of course.

@Mrsbells: @lydg: agree, short & concise.

Keep a copy with you if you are adamant about all these points. I knew what I wanted and our nurses were really great about asking before everything so I had no need for a birth plan. And my husband knew everything I wanted. He was my birth plan!

I think more so than a piece of paper it's most important he knows everything you want and he has that piece of paper. Because during he might forget everything!

I agree with @mrsbells short and concise is key! Ex: No vaccinations.

This should make it clear that you don't want a Hep B vax since you said no vaccinations in the first place.

I would just make the sentences short and more precise more like bullet points so they are easyto read at a glance. So instead of typing " we would like lights dimmed...." Just type "Lights dimmed and door closed"

I would recommend arranging the items in order of importance. And maybe move the preferences about the room (lights, music, etc) to the end, since you'll probably have full control over those anyway.

I think your plan is very well thought out. The question I would ask is, who is plan for? You might want to have two plans: one for your support people and one for the medical staff. The medical staff don't necessarily need to know about music or breathing techniques, but they should know not to offer you pain meds. Your support people might need more information, like, who you want in the room with you, a plan for calling people afterward, what you might like to eat, etc. Those are my thoughts!

I am TTC so don't know much about birth plans, but I'd take your real first and last names out of it so this thread doesn't come up on google searches! :)

Here is the rough draft of my birth plan. I wrote one awhile back but realized it was WAY to long. Here is my newest rough draft and I am looking for opinions on wording and if I should include anything else or leave anything out. Thanks

T & D Birth Plan

David and I are expecting our first child October 14, 2012 at Trinity Medical Center. We are planning a natural medication free birth. We ask that our following wishes be respected during this birth.

Labor & Delivery

1.	We would like the lights dimmed and door to remain shut to ensure privacy. We will bring our own music to play during the laboring process.
2.	We are attempting to have a natural birth, which we believe to be birth without medical and/or chemical intervention. We do understand that there are procedures which may be necessary. Except in the case of an extreme emergency, we ask that we be given the opportunity to accept or refuse any procedure. We also request that the least invasive or restricting versions of procedures (i.e. walking epidural, external monitor) be used.
3.	T would like to avoid and episiotomy and tear naturally.
4.	I plan to use walking, massage, breathing techniques, water, etc. to deal with pain. Please do not offer any chemical pain relief. I will ask for it if needed.
5.	I would like to push without time constraints and in the position of my choosing.
6.	After the birth, I wish to nurse our baby immediately. We ask that any evaluations be done while T is holding baby. We also ask that the cord not be cut until done pulsating. D would like to cut the cord.
7.	If C Sections becomes necessary Tiffany would like to be conscious and able to nurse immediately after baby is delivered.

After Birth
1.	D or T will remain with baby at all times.
2.	If baby is a boy we will not be circumcising baby.
3.	We will be delaying vaccinations. We do not want our baby receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine.
