Come to think of it, this happened to us a few times. On my son's daily sheet, it was written not to pack lunch (unless you wanted to/needed to) because the birthday girl was bringing in pizza or whatever to celebrate. Since it was the day before, I didn't send a gift. I wish I would have thought to send a wrapped book, that seems like a perfect solution.

Okay so I asked the teacher and even she thought it was weird. BUT - this is the child's first year in childcare and the mom's other son never went to childcare. So she wanted to do something special for him by sending out invitations. It sounds like she may come and decorate the room.

I think we're going to buy him a little book and slip it into his cubby (wrapped). It sounds like the mom is just really excited for him to celebrate with his friends and maybe she just doesn't have time to host a party.

Also you could consider wrapping a small flat book that could easily just be slipped into a backpack to be taken home.

Maybe the mom sent invites so parents know not to miss that day, or so they can send a snack/note if their LO isn't to participate in the treat? I'm trying so hard to give the mother the benefit of the doubt. Either way, I don't think if send anything worth more than 5 dollars. A candy bar? Card with 5 dollars? How old is the kid?

How odd! I'd send a small gift from my gift stash or a couple books, but still think invites for a daycare bday party are rather unusual. We have daycare "parties" but really it's just snack time and the bday kid passing out favors to other kids, not receiving gifts lol. My friend's daughter's daycare has parties where the norm is for the parent to cater a full lunch, rent a bounce house, and bring favors, but even with that no invites are involved and so the kid doesn't really get gifts. I'd def ask the teacher for some insight.

This is weird. Seems to me the Mom is fishing for gifts cause her kid wants them but she doesn't want to have to throw a real party. I wouldn't bring one.

I don't get the point of the invite either. Maybe the kid really wanted them or something and mom was trying to get out of target sans tantrum, lol. I wouldn't send a gift.

I would definitely ask a teacher what the expectation is. At our daycare they always celebrate each child's birthday with a special treat time with cake, but I've never heard of a kid having their actual party at school outside of the one that is provided.

So when we were living abroad this was a thing. If we got an invite it was because that was the only party the kid was going to have, so the expectation was that you would bring a gift. I would just find out via the teachers if that's the case.

For DD fourth bday this year we just had a party at school. She picked out a craft and I took the craft and treats in at snack time. We also put little goodie bags for the other kids to take home in their back packs. The goodie bag was rainbow goldfish and a coloring stencil.

Strange. At our daycare they celebrate birthdays. Parents send cake for snack time and some parents even do up little goodie bags. Nothing is expected though, it is up to the parents.

Every year I bake "cupcakes" to send to school because I know DD will enjoy celebrating with her friends but we couldn't swing a party.

I say no gift.

@mediagirl: I would. I think sending in gifts for a kid in class to open in front of a bunch of other classmates (or even just to open later but they are sitting around all day!) is just inviting issues. It's not the right time and place for a true party. I get having a treat and singing happy birthday... But I don't get the invitation thing. Maybe they were trying to be cute?

@travellingbee: @simplyfelicity: @Truth Bombs: Yeah. Is never seen this before either. Invitations sent home for the boy's birthday party. At school. I'm unsure but at the same time maybe the parents don't have a lot and can't manage a party right now? I think I may ask the teachers what the expectations are.

Wait, they made invitations for a party at school during school hours? We've had kids bring in cupcakes, etc to share on their birthdays but an invitation seems dumb. Your kid will already be at school, so they don't need to be "invited" anywhere. I would not send a gift.

I guess it depends on how often these parties are. If they happen all the time, I wouldn't want to keep up with that/extra expense. If once in a while, I would send a small gift/book.

Huh? A party during school hours? I've never heard of such a thing. I don't think I'd send a gift because that seems like trouble in school.
Eta: maybe this is a thing at that school because mine wouldn't allow it. I'd ask the school what people usually do, if this is a thing.
