If her actual bday falls on a Sunday I would do it on that Sunday. I don't think it really matters which day you have it though since after a while you'll be going to bday parties on both days and sometimes two in one day. It's insane... :P

We prefer Sundays because (well, pre-baby) we usually had more events and adult things to do on Saturdays. A baby/kiddo party usually ends early enough on Sundays to get home and relax before the weekend ends.

I personally like celebrating birthdays on the actual day. Sunday will be fine since you don't have people traveling super long distances. I am not a fan of opening presents at parties. The last kiddie party I went to was for a young child and after he opened a cool toy he wanted to play with he was not interested and rather cranky about having to open the other ones. I say skip the gift opening at the party, but provide sticky notes on the gift table to make sure all the gifts are labeled for the thank you notes.

Saturday's are most popular on our circles because a lot of people go to church and not all at the same time. I would be less inclined to attend a Sunday afternoon party since that's when I'm trying to get my last minute weekend stuff done but that's just me (we would definitely go for good friends though). Most of our circles parties are no gift parties..

doesn't matter to me. when you have kids, your weekend plans usually involve doing something with the kids anyway.

@HabesBabe: I guess I'm nosy. I like to see what the other presents are, especially now that I'm a mom so I can see cool things that I want my lo to have and fun gift ideas for others.

And even at one my lo reacted to gifts. She would play with pretty much anything we put in front of her. We let the other older kids help open gifts so it went fast and hopefully was less boring for people.

Because of where we wanted to do our party, our only option was a Sunday. It actually ended up being nice because it seemed that people didn't linger for too long and more people were free to come since most other events usually fall on Saturdays. We are normally Saturday people, but going forward we don't really have a preference anymore.

As far as presents, we brought them home to open. It was getting late and no one ever seems like they care to watch anyway.

@regberadaisy: That was my thought. Plus my sister would walk across hot coals for this little girl, so a 3pm party end on a Sunday afternoon she wouldn't blink at.

I went to a kids birthday party once where there were tons of gifts. It was a 2 kids combo party and they didn't open gifts at the party. I really liked it, because like you, I find watching gifts being opened boring, plus, it kinda took the focus off gifts. The focus was on all the kids playing and having fun rather than on getting stuff.

@prettylizy: 4 hours isn't horrible. She can drive in Saturday and go home Sunday after the party and still be home with enough time to decompress and get ready for the work week.

I'm torn about this too. My sister has to travel about 4 hours to get here, but I'd prefer to have her birthday on the Sunday. We're only doing a 1-3 cake and punch deal but Sunday seems so much nicer to me.

@artbee: But if it's a one year old, would you care if it was my/the hubs' reaction? LOL
@Foodnerd81: no traveling required... everyone will be coming from the same county. the longest drive would be about 30-45 minutes.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I've never really paid attention to the kiddie parties I've been to before :)

I dont think the day matters. Los was on a Sunday and we just went to a Sunday party.

As for presents.... That's my favorite part of the party! I think people like to see the reaction when their gift is opened.

If no one is traveling far, it doesn't matter to me. My nephews live 4-5 hours away from me so I prefer Sat for theirs so we don't have to drive late at night but otherwise, I like the idea of having it on her bday.

So LO's birthday isn't coming up for awhile, but I was wondering about her birthday party. Her actual 1st birthday falls on a Sunday this year, so I was thinking of just having her party on that day. Then, I started noticing that all of the kiddie parties I've gone to have been on Saturdays. I thought it would be nice to actually have it on her birthday, but not if Sundays are a PITA.

In either case, it would be an afternoon affair... prob 12p-4p or something like that. Cake, no games, a jumper, and a taco guy.

So, do you prefer going to Saturday or Sunday kid parties? Does it even matter? ALSO-- do kids normally open presents during their parties? I don't like it, because it's just as boring to me as opening gifts at a shower, but I don't know if it's what should be done due to etiquette, etc.
