@JennyLayneAZ: Why are people so terrible at RSVPing? Cute picture, glad it was a success.

Update: only one parent dropped off but we had people show up that didn't RSVP so that made things a little stressful for a short bit. After everyone ate I felt better lol

@Bluemasonjar: so far I've heard from 3 parents so I'll be happy if at least those 3 show up lol only one has mentioned drop and go and one parent asked if she could bring a sibling which is fine. I'll let you all know how it goes 😊

This is so interesting to me! My oldest is in kindergarten and all of the parties we have attended the parents have stayed. I use it as an opportunity to try and get to know everyone, even if there are some awkward moments where I just look at my phone.

All of our play dates with school friends have been at parks with the parents. I was planning to invite some of his friends for a playdate at our house over the summer and was going to suggest parents could drop their kids off if they preferred since we have gotten to know these families a bit through the school year.

@JennyLayneAZ: I have the same fear! I got so anxious to see which of DS friends would show up at his party last year. His birthday is at the end of the summer so it can be weird since he is transitioning from one class to the next.

As soon as we started school (kinder), our parties have been mostly drop-off (unless they involve swimming).

Thank you all for the replies! Yes, the party is at our house. I literally haven't met any of the parents, dd hasn't been to any parties this year. I guess we'll see how many parents stay vs drop and go!

DS (7) has had drop-off only parties but we know all the parents. He has gone to two parties that were drop off only. (one bowling alley, one at a movie theatre)

I am pretty introverted so would feel so awkward having to hang out at a party where I don't know the parents well.

My daughter is 6 and in first grade. We've had 1 drop off party so far. But it was at a friend's house where I'd dropped her off for playdates already, and we knew several of the other kids and parents. I wouldn't be comfortable dropping off at a brand new house where we didn't know the family well.

We had DS’s 6th on Sunday at an arcade (closed to the public during the party). We offered drop off but only one of the 8 guests took advantage of it. We had DD’s 6th at our house almost 4 years ago and again offered drop off and every parent took us up on it! I think location but also COVID plays a part. I know both my kids are more hesitant to be dropped someplace new after being home for so long and I’m more hesitant since I don’t know the parents as well. Happy bday to your DD! Feels like just yesterday we were on the labor watch boards!

Pre Covid - in Kinder the parties were mostly drop off optional … we never did it as my oldest liked me/dh to stay and many other parents stayed too. She went to her first drop off party in 1st but that was someone I knew well. She was nervous but it ended up being great for us both!

Is it at your house? I think I’d feel more inclined to drop off at a house just because I’d feel like I was adding people in a smaller area. I think it’s really kid-dependent, though - my son is six and won’t even do drop-off play dates at his friends’ houses. I just recently dropped off my 8 year old at a party for the first time and he was fine with it but did seem a little shocked when I said I was going to run some errands and I’d be back.

My DD is 7 and in first grade - we haven't had or attended any drop off parties. But there were no birthday parties during her kindergarten year. So maybe that has slowed the switch to drop off parties? I wouldn't drop her off unless I knew the parents well and I was comfortable with the location.

I'd be uncomfortable with a drop off party if I didn't know the parents and my kid hadn't ever been to their house, but I think that's around when drop off parties start. I think DS was invited to one in 1st grade.

I think at 6 it could go either way. I think we did drop off optional for my older daughter at 6—some parents stayed and others didn’t. My younger daughter just turned 6, and her parties this year have been a mix, too.

My oldest is 7 and all of his birthday parties since starting 2nd grade have been drop off parties. I have no idea what would have happened last year, since he had no party invites due to the pandemic, but I wonder if 6 is sort of a transition year.

I think 6 is a little young for drop off parties, especially since you don’t know the parents. My 5 year old DS was recently invited to a play date by a boy in his class, and his mom asked if I wanted to drop my DS off for a few hours and run errands while they played. I told her I’d prefer to stay. I had not yet met the parents and wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving him there alone, but that’s just me.

Hi all!

ODD is turning 6 on Sunday so we're having her birthday party on Saturday. We invited her class and am hoping at least one classmate shows up (I have terrible worst case scenario syndrome when it comes to my kids and their feelings and have this huge fear they'll feel rejected if no one shows up, but anyway). I just heard back from the first parent regarding the party and she spoke of dropping her kid off. Is this normal for 6?! Lol am I so overprotective to think 6 is a little young for drop off birthday parties, especially when we don't know any of the parents yet? Please weigh in on my normal meter here. I mean, I'm happy that potentially 1 kid is coming, I was just a little shocked!

:silly:
