@Ali-oop: How does DH feel about it? If it's part of his culture or family practice to have birthday parties like this and he wants to go I would keep going. But he could be in charge of food and gifts. If he doesn't care I'd just stop going.

@Ali-oop: Are your kids similar ages even? Do your kids have fun?

How often are these parties happening? If I weren't too excited about going I would probably make an excuse especially since it is an hour away.

@Foodnerd81: I guess that's what I'm wondering as well. Am I expected to send a gift?

I'm not in the situation, but reading your description, yeah I wouldn't go. If it's fun for you and you enjoy seeing everyone, great, go, buy a side dish to bring, whatever. But if you don't want to I'd just send my regrets and a card, or a present via Amazon.

That said I love 4-5 hours from my family and at this point, the drive just really sucks so I very rarely go visit and there are no hard feelings

Yes we see them several times over the summer and at major holidays. To be honest I don't entirely enjoy going. It's a far drive and it really ticks me off that they expect people to bring all of the food for the 50+ people they invite to these parties. We didn't attend last year because my husband had to work. But I feel bad because every one else in his family goes.

Do you see them outside of parties? Do you enjoy attending? Does it give you a chance to catch up with other family?

How often do you all get together? It sounds like this kiddie cousin birthday party is like a major holiday expectation. I would just stop attending and if you all are FB buddies send a bday wish that way.

I've been having a little dilemma regarding birthday party etiquette. My side of the family only does large parties for first birthdays and baptisms. After that we keep it to our children's grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

My husbands side does large parties every year. Including the parents aunts, uncles and cousins. So every year we get invited to his cousins daughters birthday party. When they send the invite they always tell friends not to bring gifts but family is expected to bring a gift and food. Asking people to bring food to a birthday party is one of my biggest pet peeve's but that's a whole other story.

So at this point I'm not sure what to do. I don't invite his cousin to my kids birthday parties anymore. Should I just keep going to her kids parties? They live about an hour away so this isn't right around the corner. I guess I'm just not sure what to do anymore since both sides do birthdays differently.
