@BeachMama: well that would be a happy surprise if a few more signed up. I'll see how the next week goes as the rsvp approaches!

@reverie: We actually ended up getting more responses over the past couple weeks, even though they were late. So now we are at our target number. I'm hoping not too many show up unannounced, or with uninvited siblings but otherwise I'm happy to have a good turnout.

@Shantuck: I think my current plan is to assume no response = not coming but I'll pack extra cupcakes / goodies just in case. Based on the response so far I extended to our social circle b/c I'd rather have too many kids than not enough! I think the party maxes out at 25 and I have 11 confirmed... so I think I'm in the clear!

@reverie: We had this same issue last year (June birthday!). I asked my son's teacher to put the invitations in the folders of all of the students and almost nobody responded. I then sent a follow up email a day or so after the "RSVP deadline" and got a few more responses. We actually had some people who had not RSVPed at all show up at the event and a few who did RSVP that they could come not show up without any notice. Why are people so rude?! This year I think I'm going to just do an evite or paperless post invite to make the inevitable follow-up easier and I'm hoping that if responding just involves a few clicks that maybe people will be more inclined to respond. If I were you, I would probably send out an email the day of the deadline and ask for a response and then invite some additional friends if you are still under your number. I highly recommend bringing a few extra goodie bags, cupcakes, etc. just in case you get any people who just show up.

@BeachMama: I'm wondering how this panned out for you! I currently have 4 RSVP out of 21 from 5/1 and only two are coming lol. Summer birthdays are a tough sell!

@Chuckles: so much stress! we only got one rsvp day one and it was a no from a little girl who has been at the other parties so off to a bad start! he's so excited I hope a few people come!

@reverie: I've been trying to decide whether to invite my son's daycare class, but I'm also nervous about whether anyone will come. It's in the summer, and I think a few of our friends who would normally come will be out of town. Honestly, I think I'm more nervous that the daycare families who come will think we're super lame if we only have a couple other friends there from outside of school. Or that it will my parents and two daycare parents and it will be super awkward. Social anxiety, anyone?

Ugh I just sent out paper invites for my sons class today... we invited 23 people and my guess is we'll get about 10 to come. I am also torn with inviting other friends. I know my son won't know, but I'm so nervous no one will bother lol. I hope we get a couple right at the start so I can not over think this.

Honestly, if I'm in your position in a few weeks, I would assume if you haven't heard that it is a no. I would reach out to other friends to pad the numbers a little bit.

If 20 people still didn't respond, I would definitely follow up. My kids' class moms are pretty good. Most responded quickly. One or two late responders. We do have contact info for parents though. If they don't respond, I assume no. I'd go ahead and invite your other friends.

I would ask the school to email the parents for you. The class invites were the only ones we didn't hear from. Or said they would come and didn't show up. So we wasted $$ on those kids. So rude!

If the whole class was invited, could you email the director to forward a reminder email to everyone? There were a couple of parties where the parents asked the director to forward an email reminder to the class.

I would say that i got a majority of the RSVPs the week before the RSVP deadline, and i still had to hunt down some RSVPs a few days before the party.

I did paper invites for my son's preschool class. Out of 23 kids, I got around 10-12 RSVP call backs. I ended up calling one parent because my son loves her daughter and I wanted to see if she could come, I didn't bother calling anyone else. I had a friend in the same situation and she had someone call about an hour before the party and say "my kid is coming", they didn't even ask if it was too late or anything. I invited a couple friends outside of his class because I knew not everyone from preschool would be there. We only ended up with 9 or 10 kids (after 2 got sick and couldn't come) which was actually a great number.

Our preschool is the same in not giving out emails so I have to do paper invites. I always get lots of late responses so you could still have a good turnout!

For my son's birthday party I wrote a note to the parents who hadn't RSVP'd and left it in their cubbies just reminding them to please let me know one way or another. That being said, I did get almost all my RSVPs right at the end - I think people look at it, think "Oh, I'll reply to that later", and then set it aside until right at the deadline. I absolutely do (or rather, did - it was so annoying when I was planning my own party that now I reply right away).

@BeachMama: Oh how annoying! Our daycare does, apparently, since I have received a number of birthday party evites.

I hope you receive some replies soon. Maybe you can distribute a reminder message that specifies that anyone who does not RSVP by the deadline will not have a spot reserved . Only you need to come up with more polite wording :-P

I know that hindsight is always 20/20, but you might want to consider an Evite next time. That way it's much easier to send a reminder via email to everyone who has not RSVP'd.

I always have problems with daycare parents RSVPing. In my experience, if you don't hear at all, they don't come. But since you invited the whole class, I would ask the teacher to remind parents to let you know if their child will be attending. We've done that in the past with good results.

Two weeks ago I put 23 invitations in my daughter's pre-k classrooms (there's 2 rooms) for her birthday party later this month, with a deadline to RSVP by May 6th. A total of 3 people have RSVP'd for either yes or no. WTF? Granted, there's still 5 more days to the deadline but I'm doubting I'll get a rush of emails/phone calls this week. The party is at a play place with an extra charge for over 15 kids, so I didn't invite other friends because I didn't know how many school friends would come. Now I don't know if I should just go ahead and invite others, or if 20 schools kids are going to randomly show up.

In your experience, have lots of school friends shown up at a party if they didn't RSVP? Have you had problems with people not RSVPing at all?
