@Ajsmommy: lol.. right?! At 2 I don't think she'll care too much but I think I'll pick up a small cake and a couple balloons for her actual day.
Fingers crossed the weather cooperates for her party Sunday though (since the original date already got snowed out)!

Hey Josina!! we just did T's second bday.. his party was Saturday and his actual bday was Sunday....

We held the presents from the party and he opened them Sunday morning so he played w new toys all day. We also sang happy birthday to him in the morning, he had special facetime with my mom and we got him an ice cream cake and candle/singing again after dinner time.....

With him being 2 I'm not sure he got it.. but he did enjoy all the hoopla!! LOL

@josina: If her actual birthday is a school day then she gets to take in a baked treat for her class. Also she gets her presents from us on her actual birthday.

Today was my 1yo’s bday 😍 and his party is next Sunday.

Today was pretty standard up until dinner time.
- I got 2 balloons for his highchair
- I got a banner for his highchair (which we’ll also use at the party)
- I made cupcakes (box mix and icing, nothing fancy)
- I ordered his favorite food (carnitas 😂)
- we sang happy birthday and his big brother blew out his candle.
- opened his 2 small gifts from us

Next Sunday will be more of a production but it’s at a play gym and I’m handling none of it. I can’t wait!

This year LO’s birthday is on Easter Sunday. He will get a basket, have cake, and likely we will do something fun/ experience. The following weekend we will throw him a party. He’ll have gifts from friends and family to open later at home.

DS is turning 5 at the end of the month and is VERY into planning his birthday this year. It's on a Tuesday and I have to work that night so I told him we couldn't do a party on his birthday (which we were able to last year). I asked him if he wanted cake on his birthday or for his party on Saturday. He chose party.
For his birthday we are taking the day off and going to the children's museum. I also let him pick his birthday dinner (pizza) and we may take him out for lunch.

My daughter wakes up to balloons (no helium—just tons of balloons from Target that my husband and I blow up) every birthday. We did it on her first birthday, and now three years later she’s excited for her fourth birthday bc she can’t wait to wake up to balloons everywhere. We sneak them in her room after she falls asleep.

@youboots: That is a good point about the birthday being more special and one-on-one!

With my son, who is 4 now, for the last 2 years DH and I take off work and take him out to a movie. I love the idea of having that 'special' time with just him and us. DD's a bit young yet so we'll probably start at 3.

For me the actual birthday is more special than the party- less busy, more 1x1 time. Gifts from us, treats, going out to dinner. This year funny enough her birthday is on a Saturday so we are having the party the same day- I don’t prefer it this way.

I decorate their door for when they wake up, then they get to pick dinner and we do a cupcake or brownie and they open presents from us on their actual birthday. Party with cake and friend presents on party day.

On their actual birthday they get to pick dinner, open presents from us, and have cake or ice cream. Every year I toy with the idea of letting them skip school and picking something fun to do like a movie or the zoo, but we haven’t actually done it.

DS gets to pick dinner and open presents from us. I usually get him balloons for his birthday but not sure this year as we will be travelling two days later. I’ll do cake or a treat, his choice.

We put balloons on her dining room chair, in the past she had a doughnut with breakfast but this year she had preschool so she took cupcakes to school. She gets to pick dinner (it was pancakes this past birthday, pasta the year before) and we have cake after dinner. She opens her gifts from us on her birthday.

This year I went to have lunch with him at school, and we bought a small birthday cake from wholefoods after school. After dinner, I put up candles, sing the birthday song, and we blew out the candles, and we all have a slice. I usually buy a balloon for him too each year, but this year I skipped / slacked off... oops

This year was tricky, it was 1. on a school day 2. DH was traveling 3. DS had an oral surgery scheduled the very next day, so I wanted it to be as low key as possible. Normally we'd go out for a birthday dinner too. When DS was younger we always did Hibachi. But it changed for the recent years because we can't stand the bad food anymore lol

For us, if birthday party and birthday are different days it's been because the birthday is on a weekday. So we usually:
- bring a special treat to school
- they get to pick dinner and a special after school activity
- we do cake and presents from parents

DD's 2nd birthday is Tuesday and her party will be the following Sunday. I'm debating on if I need to make a cake for her day, and then the fancy cake for her party.

She will get her birthday gift from us ON her birthday, and
a birthday dinner (probably pizza since that's her current fav).
I'm debating on balloons - I have a giant 2 balloon to blow up but then it probably won't stay inflated until her actual party...

If your LO's birthday party and actual birthday aren't on the same day - how do make their birthday special? Do you have cake both days? Gifts both days? Anything special you do to celebrate the actual day?
