I'd pick Option #2. Having the game on would be a good distraction from the crazy ;)

my lo's birthday is the 31st (the saturday of labor day weekend.) we thought it was pretty cool that his first birthday is on a saturday so we decided to go with that even though it is a holiday weekend. we actually just sent out the invites today, about 7 weeks early, to give more of a heads-up.

If it were me I'd probably go with option 1 because it would leave me more time to "recover" from crazy family. I need decompression time and having on the 3 day weekend would give me that.

Flying home and celebration later just isn't an option. DH is on call every third weekend so we can only do it one weekend. Plus, since we are saving for LO 2, we can't afford the expense of going home and having a party here. :-( I'm not sure I have the time or energy anyway...but I sure wish I did!

Not really stressed about it (yet) just would need to book tickets soon or start planning party here. Argh.

I like @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: idea too. But only you know if that would just stress you out way too much, plus, flying over the holiday weekend could be extra expensive and frustrating. I wouldn't worry that much about the turn out though, since I feel like a big party would be overwhelming anyway. I think you should spend it with whoever YOU want to spend it with the most.Screw everyone else ;)

I like what @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: proposed. If it's financially feasible, it should cut some of the drama and give your LO two groups to celebrate with.

First, crazy or not, having two families to celebrate your LOs 1st birthday is awesome.

I'd fly home the holiday weekend AND invite fam over for the game and cake the following weekend.

DS's first birthday is labor day weekend, so it's a 3 day weekend for pretty much everyone. I am tossing around 3 ideas.

1. Having it the Saturday of the 3-day weekend and possibly a mediocre turnout. We would have a backyard party at our house and have to invite DH's crazy family who I can't stand, and friends and other family. It would probably be a smaller turnout since it's a 3-day weekend.

2. Having it the weekend after the holiday at the house and a later in the day backyard party. This is also the 1st home football game of our college alma mater and we would put a tv in the backyard and people can watch the game and hang out. Invite DH's crazy family and our friends. Not as many might show up because some will probably be at the game.

3. Fly to my hometown for the holiday weekend and spend DS's birthday with my family and friends in my hometown just hanging out. Invite DH's crazy family who probably won't come, but know they will throw a fit since we'll be far away for his first birthday. No matter what choice I do, they will create some kind of drama, so whatevs.

4. Not have a party at all and just screw it all! Ha!
