@sapphire: when I'm ready to start purchasing stuff for the baby I plan to shop at all those places- CL, consignment shops (I know where the ones are in the high end neighborhoods) and sign up for HB Gold to post ISO on the Classifieds. My husband agreed to everything on my list at full cost, but I'd love to get some deals though.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: have you looked for 2nd hand bassinets? Craigslist, Buy Nothing, local consignment shops? I've gotten so much nice stuff that way.

@QBbride: I wish! The moses basket I'm eying is from Moba, an UK company that will begin selling the baskets stateside later this year. Maybe, just maybe I'll luck up with someone whose already looking to sell it within 5-6 months of purchasing it. The Moba basket is made out of recycled plastic and comes in lots of fun colors.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we live in the city and use our stroller to walk a lot. I used the basinet more for walking with my son but we also took it on a few long weekends away to sleep in since it folds flat. Because my daughter has slept in it every night I haven't bothered really using it for walks, since usually I wear her and my son goes in the stroller. It's nice and compact next to our bed. You could probably get one (or a Moses basket) for fairly cheap second hand.

We have the g-luxe and I think it's for 3 months+ since it doesn't lay totally flat.

@QBbride: if we get a standard stroller that can be used from birth it will be the Armadillo XT, which doesn't have a bassinet option. We may end up not needing a stroller from birth and in that case the Uppababy G-Luxe definitely doesn't have a bassinet option. Tell me, are you a city or suburban mom/ where do you use your stroller/ how often?

A separate moses-style bassinet isn't the worse thing; I figure it transitions into stuffed animal/ doll storage?

My son slept in the Bjorn bouncer (often inside his crib, in our room) until he was more than five months old. We never intended for it to be his bed, but it was a great tool for dealing with his terrible reflux, and the second it seemed at all risky, we transitioned him out of it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: can you get a basinet attachment for your stroller so you can use it for night sleep and for walks too? We have the uppababy vista and my DD is 3m and still sleeping in the UBV basinet on a jolly jumper stand in our room.

Thanks for all your help! It sounds like we'll definitely need a first place sleeping place. I measured the crib for our room and that would just take up too big a foot print. I'm not in love with the look of Fisher Price (FP) products, but they function well. The bassinet I want (bassinet + stand) is nice looking, but the cost per use is hard to justify when FP is on the market.

Too low next to bed. Also not that cozy. Would go for a rock n play instead. The non vibrating ones are cheap, not sure if they make them anymore.

Our LO napped in the bjorn. She loved napping in it; we'd just bounce her to sleep. However as she became more alert we had to swaddle her to nap in it; if she kicked she'd startle. Naps were ok. Frequent but short.

At night she slept in an arms reach mini cosleeper. Until about 3.5 months which was great. A great size and a decent price. We could have used it much longer but shipped her off to the crib in her room.

But then I bit the bullet and bought a fisher price snug a something swing. Best decision ever. Helloooo 90 min naps. I suddenly realized how people actually got things accomplished.

I am the bjorn bouncer's biggest fan for general multipurpose use. However the swing, for us, played a huge role for naps (and getting into a heathy nap routine)

We had it but I didn't let LO sleep in it due to SIDS risks. Only on us or crib/PnP. I think I'm a bit of an exception though. My MIL let her sleep in it once when she was watching her which I wasn't happy about.

We used it for 2 months for both nights and naps, and then transitioned him to his crib. We would let him sleep in it with the vibration feature on all night long. Being on an angle was great for his reflux, and he loved being snuggled in there in a swaddle.

When my son was a few weeks old he would very occasionally fall asleep in there, but he was typically so active in it (could move it by kicking his legs even as a newborn) that he didn't sleep in there for any long stretches of time. Other babies might be different though!
