If the baby is only going to be a month old before you move, I definitely wouldn't spend the money. Your LO won't quite have day/night figured out anyway. And newborns pretty much sleep any time they aren't eating, pooping or crying.

Interesting. Maybe I'll just get some cheap black fabric and tuck over the blinds - right now there are no curtains so I'd also have to buy & hang a curtain rod.. potentially for only a month before we move again. Thanks for the input!

They might be helpful for you and DH to get some sleep, but I doubt they'll be needed for your LO. Ours is 4 months old, and her room faces due west. Even during the long summer days, we didn't have troubles getting her to go to bed at night. Napping during the day was another issue, but it was only because she wanted to be where the action was, not because of the light.

We have blackout curtains in our room for DH (light sleeper). They were custom made, but for the nursery, I will probably get some cheap ones from Target. For all our rooms, we have sheers & curtains. With this kind of set-up, I think you can use the b/o curtains when you need to, and just use sheers when you want to let some light maybe? *In our nursery-to-be, there are blinds as well, so even more light control...

Blackout curtains were a must for us, but she was born in April so the days were getting longer. It's light from about 6am to 10/11pm in the summer here.

We have some we bought at Target in our bedroom. DH likes no light when sleeping. It is great on the weekends when we sleep in late.

We have huge east facing windows in the bedroom and LO was born in the summertime so light was a big issue. Rather than get new curtains we just bought blackout lining, basically a second set of curtains you hang behind your existing ones, works great and is pretty inexpensive.

We also didn't use blackout curtains until LO was about 3 months. It makes the WORLD of a difference come nap time, and she slept much longer. They also helped because during the summer, it doesn't get dark until 11pm where i live...

We didn't get black out curtains until Lo was a bit older. During the early months it didn't make a difference.
Definitely worth it now though. I think we put the curtains up when Lo was around 6 months old?

We replaced curtains in the nursery with some slightly thicker ones, but they do not block out all the light and we decided we didn't want them to. We want to make sure that a little bit of light can get in during the day to help distinguish night and day. But it is definitely plenty dark enough to get a good nap during the day, I feel.

we bought blackout curtains from target for $24 total? we have them hanging over blackout blinds that the prev owners left, because on their own; light still comes through.

but it does make the world of a diff - lighting wise; won't know if it helps our LO or not, but i think it'll be worth it!

I actually read that in order to help your baby become more on your schedules, you should allow it to have some filtered sunlight during the day and "experience" nighttime. Haven't looked into it, but I thought it was interesting.

Sooo when we stopped preventing pregnancy we thought for sure we'd be in a house by Fall... turns out we're not! I'm scrambling to make our guest room a nursery and feel cozy.

I know black out curtains can be helpful to encourage sleep - is there any reason to not use them? I hate to buy/make some when they probably won't fit our windows once we move.. but also know I should do everything I can to maximize our odds of good sleep once baby is here!

Opinions?? Worth it?
