@psw27: Depends on if you're north or south of I-44 in Missouri :P We have had 60 degree days for a week and then snow and ice the next week over the last few winters.

@psw27: I'm sure you will be fine - and you could bring a shawl to cover your shoulders if you get there, look around, and decide you feel uncomfortable!

@psw27: you can also bring a shawl to cover up and keep warm in church- I’m sure you’ll need something anyway. In dec.

@MrsLonghorn: That is sort of part of what I'm thinking about! What if my dress is too "revealing" for a church setting (not that I anticipate cutouts or anything crazy! It's December in Missouri and I've had 2 children so my stomach will certainly be covered!) It just seems so flashy to wear a strapless evening gown to church, but I guess I got married in a strapless gown at a church!

@looch: I'd probably just a wear a simple long sleeved dress to the church and then change into something more "evening" attire for the celebration part.

I'll probably just wear my evening gown to church... Since it's winter, it will be close to dark/evening anyway at 4 pm. Ugh. Winter.

I attended a Catholic mass wedding with a 90 minute break before the reception. It was a 2 hour drive away but we weren't staying in a hotel that night, so we had nowhere to go...we drove to IKEA in our church attire, shopped a bit, and I changed clothes in a remote section of the parking lot. :silly:

However, I will say that I was totally shocked when relatives of the bride/groom got up for readings during the ceremony, and the 2 cousins stood on the pulpit (is that the right word?) wearing a neon pink + rhinestone prom dress with cutouts all around her mid-section so you could see her back/belly, and the other girl was wearing a strapless mini-dress, without any sort of shawl or cover.

I am not a modest person at all, but I am also not Catholic and so I was hyper-aware of my appearance and behavior at this wedding, and concerned about being "appropriate".... there were plenty of people who did not change clothes, but managed to pick formal attire that was not as flashy or revealing.

It sounds like there isn’t too much down time between the church service and the cocktail hour. I’d just wear the formal dress to the church. You can always grab a drink at the hotel bar in between.

My sister went to a Greek Orthodox wedding a couple years ago that was black tie; everyone wore their formal wear to the church. The reception was at a hotel about 20 minutes away, with about an hour between ceremony ending and reception starting.

What would you wear to the church if you were to change into your gown for the reception?

That would be my deciding factor.

I just went to a black tie wedding in June with a mass beforehand and it was a mix of both at the church. I just wore my gown to both for ease.

I guess it would just depend then! I'd probably just go in my gown even if everything is close together. But if you have absolutely nothing to do for an hour and might head back to hotel anyway, then maybe change?

@psw27: I think you will see some people change but many will just come in their fancy gowns. So I would do whatever is most comfortable for you, but if you aren’t planning to go home/ hotel in between otherwise, just wear the same dress. I went to a black tie wedding in NY that was similar timing and it was probably half and half with women who changed or not. (I did because I had to go back and breastfeed in the hotel before the reception anyway!).

@psw27: I attended a black tie wedding in Miami. The church service was a hour long Catholic mass followed by an outdoor reception at a botanical garden. I wore my fancy gown the entire time. With the ceremony and reception times being so close together I doubt the bride is expecting guests change their clothes.

I have a black tie wedding coming up in December. The reception is at 6 p.m. at a private club. The ceremony is at 4 p.m. in a church. I've never had a black tie wedding that started with a church ceremony before - do you wear your black tie outfit to the church? Or do you change in between (since there will be about an hour between events?
