I'm torn. We have them, so I don't know what his sleep would be like without them. His room doesn't get a lot of daytime light though so I think he could manage without.

I sleep better in the dark, so it's no shock that my baby does too. He can still fall asleep in hotels, etc. when we don't have them. I don't understand the arguments against them!

Love! I got them when we started sleep and nap-training. I felt it was needed to help her sleep for longer stretches of time.

I prefer for DD to be able to sleep in rooms with some light b/c she has to be able to nap at daycare, on family vacations, in the car, etc. If she were not such a good sleeper though, I would do whatever I needed to get her to sleep. If that meant blackout curtains, then bring them on!

@dojo: True, I forgot about that benefit. We have the curtains that block temperature and sound, too, so that helps keep the house at a constant level.

When I made the switch, I noticed a difference in LO's ability to sleep for longer periods of time. I bought the cheap ones from Target but couldn't stand the smell. Instead I have a blanket over his window, and it has been pretty effective for the past year and a half or so.

We use them but mainly to block out the sun that was making his room super hot during the summer. Now that it's cooler (and darker) they are not so necessary.

I thought I would need these, as LO was a summer baby and her room is the brightest in the house, but she transitioned to her crib just fine at the peak of summer without them. I would have bought them in an instant if the light bothered her though!

They were GREAT during the summer, when we were trying to put her on a reasonable schedule, but it was still bright as hell outside at 7pm. Now that it's dark at 7, it's not a huge deal. Now they're just cute curtains (i have the ruffly blackout shades from Pottery Barn)

My baby needs dark to fall asleep for the night but she get fussy way before dark - so we need them. She naps regardless of lighting conditions.

We needed them. I tried to do it without them but at night he just would not go down unless it was dark. Naps are fine, he can sleep anywhere for those.

Baby's not here yet, but we had put them in all the rooms when we moved in, so we'll have them in his/her room. I figure we'll do daytime naps in the natural light, but keep the blackout curtains closed at night so that LO doesn't get woken up early in the morning.

We don't have any cause our blinds make her room pretty dark during the day. But she is use to napping in the light since the lights are on in the room at day care.

Theoretically I'd love it if LO could sleep in all sorts of conditions, but she's a terrible sleeper and blackout curtains make a huge difference.

the nursery windows face our apartment building's courtyard and there's quite a bit of light that enters the room. for daytime naps i don't close them.

What is your take on blackout curtains? I've heard two schools of thought and I'm curious where people stand and why. Do you love blackout curtains because they keep the room really dark and help baby sleep, or do you prefer not to use them so the baby can sleep in all sorts of conditions?
