@sorrycharlie: The most effective thing I've found is blackout shades with lined curtains. At our old house we got some nicer shades from either Lowes or HD that were the cut to fit, cordless blackout shades. They weren't cheap, but not super expensive either. Then we had lined curtains that covered all of the window. It was fantastic.

In our current house they had wood blinds up, which are pretty but not great at light blocking. We also ended up having to buy new curtains because we had an additional window. We got blackout liners for the curtains, but I think they're a pain. They're also kind of meh in terms of effectiveness.

@Foodnerd81: yeah they have an actual blackout shade! like this - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00228456/ - but I'd get white

@Anagram: they're very small, square windows - and unfortunately, each window has a radiator vent directly under it, and halfway up the wall..lol. so any curtains I close can't cover the heaters or it'll trap most of the heat! so annoying.

@Mrs. Bee: @mrsjyw: @looch: yay good to know! yeah nighttime has been a battle lately because of the sun!

I have blackout cordless roman shades, we could probably also use curtain panels on the side to address those light leaks, but we don't have daytime naps any longer.

We have blackout blinds and curtains in both babies rooms. The blinds alone are probably enough!

blackout shades work better for sure. we have blackout shades in both the kids' rooms. really helpful in the summer when it's still light out at bedtime and they don't want to sleep!

@Anagram: that Do picture makes so much sense why our nice blackout curtains are so unhelpful. They were here when we moved in so I never gave it much thought.

I think it depends on your window needs, haha. We live on an urban area, so sometimes I want privacy but still want light through the windows, and other times (for sleep), I want total blackout.

So we have regular hunter Douglas silhouette shades that open from top or bottom, and I have long blackout curtains over each window (different curtains on every room that match our decor).

Our blackout curtains make the room 100% pitch black--but they are hung like the "do" picture so there is a lot of overhang on all sides of the window, so there are no light leaks.

@sorrycharlie: I have the IKEA blackout curtain liner (you attach it behind a regular curtain with little clips). It dims the room some but you could absolutely still read a book in the middle of the day, which is not good enough to me. Not sure if that's different than the shade. We have that layered with the black paper redi shade thing from Home Depot, because we are fancy.

In our master we have pretty nice blackout curtains, but a lot of light gets in around the edges. I think the curtains need to go a fair amount past the edge of the windows to be really effective.

If I was starting over I would do blackout cordless blinds with pretty curtains.

Right now my older daughter has just a blackout panel (Eclipse). It works just fine. But I'm considering options for our new house, and my youngest will have a double window in her room.. So I'm considering a double blackout shade and normal curtains.

Does anyone have Ikea's blackout shade? How decent is it? Would you just go standard shade and blackout curtains?
