I still have blackout shades as an adult! I only close her shades partway at naptime. At night we use a nightlight.

We will probably not get rid of them. He is 3.5 and we have a night light. Well, it's a fish tank with a night setting.

2.5 was when she probably didn't need them anymore. BUT we need them in all the bedrooms during the summer because it doesn't get dark until 11pm.

For us it had more to do with the season of the year than with LO's age. It was blazingly bright in there all summer long so we doubled up on the blackout shades + blackout film. Once it started to get darker and cloudier in the fall, we took down the blackout shades and let a bit more light in. These days now that LO has started daycare, we're trying to let even more light in so she gets used to napping in a bright room. (I really don't get why they can't put cribs in a separate adjoining space that could be kept a little bit darker, but that's another issue).

Good question. My lo wants the light on now but we still black out her shades. I like it because it makes her think it's dark outside when she goes to bed, even if it isn't. :) She's 3.5.

LO's room is nearly pitch black and has been since his newborn days. I do think it helps him sleep, but I wonder about if it would help to have a little bit of light so that he can play with his lovey or whatever if he gets up? I also read that really dark rooms are more helpful when they're younger?
So, if you had blackout shades for your LO when they were really young, did you ease up on it as they got older? I haven't gotten him a nightlight yet but I guess that's an option too...
